Laurence Fishburne jumped into acting as a teenager. Young Fishburne was so enthusiastic about being behind the camera he even lied about his age to land some of his earliest roles. Now in his 60s, Fishburne has played one iconic character after another: Morpheus from The Matrix, Othello from Shakespeare, and Jack Crawford from Hannibal – to name a few.

Over the decades, Fishburne has moved between television and films flawlessly. While the actor seems to be tackling darker, more grisly subject matter lately with his roles, Fishburne has acted in nearly every genre. The Oscar-nominated actor can make audiences laugh, scream, or cry. Fishburne’s recent performances in the John Wick trilogy prove he has plenty of creative energy left in him.

10 John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) – 7.5

In the second installment of the John Wick trilogy, Keanu Reeve’s title character has retired from the assassin game. However, Wick is being forced back into work by a relentless crime boss named Santino.

Directed by Chad Stahelski, responsible for helming all three films, Fishburne reunites with Reeves in this sequel. Fishburne plays an underground crime lord known as The Bowery King, whose henchmen Wick must go to for help after being injured by his enemies.

9 John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) – 7.5

Fishburne returns as The Bowery King in Parabellum, where he is punished by his superiors for helping John Wick in the previous film. The Bowery King is forced to answer to the High Table, and the council doesn’t like what he has to say.

Ian McShane also stars in the film as another crime lord, Winston, who manages the New York Continental hotel. As the High Table attempts to pitch The Bowery King and Winston against Wick, Wick’s real allies and real enemies are exposed.

8 CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000 – 2015) – 7.6

Between 2008 and 2011, Fishburne starred in the original CSI, playing Dr. Raymond Langston. Fishburne joined the cast of the popular crime series after William Peterson departed and his character Gil Grissom was phased out.

In the series, Dr. Langston is known for his calm demeanor. That being said, the investigator sometimes takes the cases personally, leading to emotional overreactions.

John Singleton’s coming-of-age drama follows a group of young black men growing up in South Central Los Angeles. Cuba Gooding Jr. stars as Jason “Tre” Styles III, who moves in with his father when he’s 10-years-old.

Fishburne plays Tre’s father, Jason “Furious” Styles Jr., a man who tries to teach his son about how to survive in a neighborhood plagued by gang violence, systemic racism, and economic inequality. Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Regina King, and Angela Bassett co-star.

6 The Color Purple (1985) – 7.8

Steven Spielberg directed this adaptation of Alice Walker’s beloved novel The Color Purple. Starring Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, and Oprah Winfrey, the film explores intergenerational and spousal abuse – focusing its attention on a few connected black women around the turn of the 20th century.

Fishburne’s career didn’t take off until after his small role in The Color Purple. In the film, he plays Swain, a musician who helps Harpo (the husband of Winfrey’s character Sofia) open up a late-night club.

5 Mystic River (2003) – 7.9

Fishburne plays Detective Sergeant Whitey Powers in this gritty crime drama set in Boston. Mystic River, based on the Dennis Lehane novel, tells the story of three men whose lives are forever intertwined after a tragic childhood event.

Fishburne was a regular during the first two seasons of Paul Reubens’s oddball children’s series Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. As Cowboy Curtis, Fishburne assumes a Texas accent and joins Pee-Wee Herman for various misadventures.

3 Apocalypse Now (1979) – 8.4

When he was just 14, Fishburne landed a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now. Fishburne’s character, Tyrone “Mr. Clean” Miller, is a 17-year-old Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class from the Bronx.

Fishburne lied about his age in order to act in the film, saying he was 17 like his character. Production dragged on for so long that Fishburne was indeed 17 by the end of filming.

2 Hannibal (2013 – 2015) – 8.5

As FBI Agent Jack Crawford, Fishburne plays the boss who encourages Dr. Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) to become a special investigator in Bryan Fuller’s NBC reimagining of the Hannibal Lecter saga. Crawford is poised, stubborn, and pushes Graham to his limits in his quest to catch serial killers.

Hannibal lasted three seasons on NBC, with Mads Mikkelsen playing the titular role. Bloody, visceral, and surreal, Hannibal maintains a huge cult following.

1 The Matrix (1999) – 8.7

There’s no doubt Morpheus from The Matrix is Fishburne’s most iconic character. Inspired by and named after the character Morpheus from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman graphic novels, Fishburne’s character is the captain of the Nebuchadnezzar, a hovercraft representing the last human city, Zion.

Morpheus recruits Keanu Reeves’s Neo to help him free their species from enslavement within the Matrix. Morpheus guides Neo through the Matrix as the young man comes to discover he’s the One.
