What Happened With OxygenOS 12 On The OnePlus 9 And Whats Next

OnePlus has halted the rollout of the OxygenOS 12 software update due to performance complaints from users. The company had only recently started rolling out OxygenOS 12 to the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, and the update was designed to bring Android 12 to the 2021 flagships. The new version of OxygenOS is built on an integrated codebase with OPPO’s ColorOS.

Earlier in 2021, OnePlus announced that it was merging with OPPO, another smartphone brand owned by the same parent company, BBK Electronics. Prior to that announcement, the two companies had unified some of their teams including their R&D department. OnePlus also disclosed it was integrating the codebase of its own OxygenOS and OPPO’s ColorOS. Global versions of new OnePlus phones launched after that announcement run on a version of OxygenOS that’s based on the integrated codebases.

For older phones that are still under software support, the change would come with the Android 12 update. As a result, the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are the first OnePlus phones to get the Android 12-based OxygenOS 12 update that is built upon the integrated codebase. When OnePlus announced that it would integrate the two codebases, the company explained that users would likely not notice the change and that OxygenOS would remain the OS for global users. However, complaints from users seem to highlight not only issues with an integration of the codebases, but also how the software is OxygenOS in name and ColorOS in look and features. OnePlus has acknowledged the issues caused by the update and confirmed to Android Police that it is pausing the rollout. It it understood that OnePlus will release a new iteration as soon as possible.

Trust Broken With OnePlus Users?

While it is not unusual for a manufacturer to suspend an update due to issues with the software, one complaint OnePlus may not be able to resolve is the changes OxygenOS 12 brings. Many OnePlus fans have stayed with the brand for the software experience they get from OnePlus phones. Now, with every new iteration of OxygenOS, OnePlus appears to be losing part of what originally drew people to the brand. The uncomfortable truth is that things are likely to get worse. Next year, OnePlus phones starting with the OnePlus 10 will come with a new “Unified and Upgraded ” operating system that combines all of the features of OxygenOS and ColorOS. Global versions of OnePlus phones still eligible for updates will get the new OS with 2022’s major Android update. In other words, Android 13.

Apparently, the new operating system will be customized for OnePlus devices and keep the DNA of OxygenOS. However, and going by the current state of things, that might prove hard for OnePlus fans to believe considering how watered-down the newest version of OxygenOS already appears to be. For reference, there is no specific date yet as to when OnePlus will resume the rollout for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. Also, it should be expected that the Android 12 update for other devices, such as the OnePlus 8 series and eligible OnePlus Nord smartphones, will be slightly delayed too.
