Green Lantern 10Part Series Sets Arrow CoCreator As Writer

HBO Max is moving forward with the Green Lantern TV show from Arrowverse executive producer Greg Berlanti. WarnerMedia made a big splash last year when revealing their first slate of DC TV shows. With Berlanti’s track-record in producing multiple DC TV shows, the producer revealed that he is working on Strange Adventures as well as a series centered on the Green Lantern mythology. Details have been extremely limited ever since the announcement was made at the WarnerMedia event. Over this year, they have slowly begun to reveal various details about what fans can look forward to with this latest iteration of the Emerald Knight.

While never revealing the identity of the two human Lanterns, Berlanti did reveal earlier that Sinestro would be a primary character in the series as it follows his origin story. Besides that, HBO Max has been vocal that their DC TV shows, including Green Lantern, would be getting movie-quality production, hinting that the budget will be very big, compared to The CW’s Arrowverse shows. While the series has been in active development, HBO Max had never technically given it a series order, but chances were never low on that.

Variety revealed that HBO Max has officially picked up Green Lantern to series, and will consist of 10 episodes for its first season. While Berlanti is producing, the series will officially be executive produced by Seth Grahame-Smith who will be the showrunner. Arrow co-creator and Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim is also involved as he’ll be writing for the series. No specific premiere date has been set as the show hasn’t gone into production just yet. For Grahame-Smith, this marks as a return for him in the superhero world as he wrote The LEGO Batman Movie. He was also initially going to direct The Flash film before departing the project in 2016.

Guggenheim, who has been working with Berlanti for over a decade, is getting a second round with Green Lantern. Berlanti and Guggenheim co-wrote the Green Lantern film from 2011 starring Ryan Reynolds that was a critical and commercial disaster. But the duo has, since 2012, helped create the Arrowverse, which has become one of Warner Bros.’ most successful DC franchises of all-time with more than seven shows produced for The CW. Guggenheim has also been working on Legends of Tomorrow alongside his Arrow duties.

The news also came with the big reveal that not one, but four iconic Lanterns will be featured in the series. With Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and Guy Gardner being given the spotlight, it’ll be the first time all four of those characters appear in live-action. With the Green Lantern Corps film focusing on Hal Jordan and John Stewart, it makes sense for the TV series to follow other Lanterns, though it’s unclear if Green Lantern Corps is still in active development at Warner Bros. No further details about the series’ plot were revealed at the time. But with the series order, casting will likely begin this fall if Green Lantern aims to start filming in 2021.
