Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

Love them hate them, Grey’s Anatomy is well known for its larger-than-life ensemble cast of characters. Throughout its 18 seasons, many characters have come and gone through the doors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Even the hospital itself has changed names three times; previously being known as Seattle Grace Hospital and Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital.

The popular medical drama is chock-full of talented performers. Many have been nominated and even won Prime-time Emmy awards for their performances. However, while some actors have been able to completely embody their characters, many others have fallen a bit short.

10 Nailed It: Sandra Oh’s Cristina Yang Upped the Game for Prime Time Television Acting

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

Sandra Oh set a new bar for television performances when she brought to life the complicated character of Cristina Yang. Another actor could have easily made Cristina an unlikeable, cold character, but Sandra portrayed a character who was always lovable, even when her actions were unlikeable. Sandra’s nuances made Cristina believable and relatable, and her chemistry with the series title character, Meredith Grey, was undeniable. Not only did Sandra Oh nail her role as Cristina Yang, but she also turned Cristina into one of television’s most memorable characters — being nominated 5 times at the Emmys for her role.

9 Fell Short: Katherine Heigl’s Izzy Stevens Fizzled Out

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

When Grey’s Anatomy began, Izzy Stevens’ character was a breath of fresh air. She was the light to otherwise dark personalities of the other female characters in the series. This was when Katherine Heigl shined in her role. However, as Izzy’s life went through changes and traumas, she became less optimistic, and her strong moral center began to shift.

While Katherine Heigl previously had nailed the role (and even won an Emmy for it), she seemed to lose her ability to bring Izzy to life as the character matured. By the time Heigl left the series, the character had become less strong-willed and more of a whiny brat who only thought about herself.

8 Nailed It: Kate Walsh’s Addison Montgomery Deserved a Spin-Off

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

Kate Walsh undeniably succeeded in nailing the character of Addison Montgomery. Her introduction quickly managed to steal the show, causing a collective gasp from audiences everywhere as they realized McDreamy was a married man. Addison could’ve quickly become a villain but Kate’s ability to bring humor and humility to the character not only made Addison a fan favorite, but also warranted her own spin-off. With Private Practice, audiences got an inside peek and a fresh outlook on Addison Montgomery’s. Fans love the character so much Addison even made a two-episode appearance in season 18.

7 Fell Short: Alex Landi’s Nico Kim Made Grey’s History But Has No Personality

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

When Dr. Nico Kim made his first appearance in Season 15 of Grey’s Anatomy, he made series history as the first gay male character. However, his emotionless acting left much to be desired by audiences. Even his relationship with Dr. Schmitt wasn’t enough to save the character. In fact, after the character breakup in Season 16, it became clear that Nico’s other half had been the only interesting thing about him. Unfortunately, a character who should be a fan favorite has become a place holding statue in many eyes.

6 Nailed it: TR Knight’s George O’Malley Is A Fan Favorite

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

What was not to love about TR Knight’s performance as George O’Malley? TR brought the character to life in the sweetest ways and George quickly became the friend everyone dreamed of. He was empathetic, wise, and all in for those he loved.

TR Knight’s performance was so great, it earned him an Emmy Nomination in 2017 for the role. No one was ready for George to leave the series and his shocking death was truly heartbreaking. Fans were thrilled to see him return for an episode in Season 17.

5 Fell Short: Camilla Luddington’s Jo Wilson Should Be So Much More

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

Camilla Luddington isn’t a bad actress. In fact, she’s quite good. Unfortunately, what she has to bring to the table isn’t quite enough for the character she plays. Jo Wilson is more than just Alex Karev’s love interest. She’s a character who brings many sensitive subjects to the forefront. Jo Wilson is a domestic abuse survivor, a woman who struggles with mental health, and a child who was raised in the foster care system, to name a few. Through it all, Jo has remained resilient and still manages to see the good in those around her. Although Camilla’s performance is strong at times, it’s inconsistent — falling short of nailing the character and portraying all Jo Wilson should be.

4 Nailed It: Jessica Capshaw’s Arizona Robbins Brings Sunshine

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

Jessica Capshaw won the audience’s hearts when she rolled into Seattle Grace on her wheelies. The new head of Peds, Arizona Robbins was a ray of sunshine in the hospital corridors and the series’ first lesbian character. Arizona’s relationship with Callie Torress was a fan favorite for years until the storyline’s ugly demise, and Jessica’s acting in the musical episode kept audiences grounded in the reality of the situation behind the music. Even when the character faced insurmountable trauma at the hands of the plane crash in Season 8, Capshaw brought heartbreakingly believable grief and struggle to Arizona’s new challenges — all while maintaining the heart at the core of her character.

3 Fell Short: Debbie Allen’s Catherine (Fox) Avery Is Nothing Special

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

Debbie Allen is a legend in the Broadway world, as well as the film and tv world. To say she’s anything short of incredible would be ludicrous. However, when it comes to her role as Catherine Avery, it’s nothing extraordinary. In fact, it almost feels like Debbie Allen phones in the role, episode after episode, and only does the bare minimum required. While many actors go above and beyond their roles, it seems as though Debbie only brings herself to the role of Catherine Avery and nothing more. Debbie’s talent is undeniable which makes her performance as Catherine all the more disappointing.

2 Nailed It: Chandra Wilson’s Miranda Bailey Is No Caricature

Greys Anatomy 5 Actors Who Nailed Their Roles (& 5 Who Fell Short)

A tough character like Miranda Bailey could easily be made into a caricature of a human being. However, as audiences have experienced in the 18 seasons she has remained on Grey’s Anatomy, that is not the case. Chandra Wilson takes the character’s no-nonsense attitude and effortlessly melds it into a fully layered human being.

As portrayed by Chandra, Miranda is a fully rounded character. Even when Miranda has made questionable choices, Chanda still nailed the role and made each decision believable. In fact, Chandra’s performance is so undeniably good she has been Emmy-nominated for her work as Miranda Bailey 4 times.

1 Fell Short: Tessa Ferrer’s Leah Murphy Is Forgettable

Tessa Ferrer joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy in Season 9 as incoming intern, Leah Murphy. The character wasted no time becoming a love interest for Alex Karev and later, Arizona Robbins. It seemed everywhere she went Leah Murphy caused problems at the hospital and became romantically obsessed with other doctors. Despite many attempts to give the character interesting storylines, Tessa’s unremarkable portrayal of Leah made her pretty forgettable. Unfortunately, Leah Murphy’s most memorable qualities are whininess and not being very good at her job.
