Dr. Derek Shepherd, also known as “McDreamy”, and Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed, “McSteamy” are the two most sought after doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West hospital, not just for their surgical skills, but for their charm, wit, and good looks as well.

Both characters have dramatic love lives that played out for audiences weekly on ABC’s hit primetime medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy. Their love stories are the foundation of the series and the words they say to express their love are very memorable.

When Derek and Meredith first get tougher in the first episode of season one, he forgets to mention one very important fact about his current love life, he’s still married.

Midway through the first season, Derek’s wife, Addison Shepherd, arrives at Seattle Grace hospital and Meredith learns the truth, which makes her question everything she thought she and Derek had together. It’s the day of Cristina and Burke’s wedding. Meredith is Cristina’s maid of honor, and Derek is Burke’s best man. There’s been a lot of tension between Meredith and Derek in the episodes leading up to this one and Derek tells Meredith that he flirted with a woman at a bar the night before.

Meredith asks if she should be worried. Derek tells her that he’s all in. He’s in love with her and will never leave her, but he’s worried because she keeps leaving him.

With a little help from the Chief of Surgery, Dr. Richard Webber, Derek proposes to Meredith. After a long day operating on one of their own, Izzie Stevens, Richard meets Meredith by the elevators, as the doors opens, Richard blocks Meredith from getting on and tells her to wait for the next one, which she does.

When the next elevator comes, Derek is standing there, surrounded by scans and files from the cases he and Meredith have worked on together. He gives Meredith a beautiful speech and tells her he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.

Mark and Lexie, along with other doctors from Seattle Grace Mercy West hospital, are in a horrific plane crash. Lexie was sitting in the back of the plane, which broke off from the rest of it, leaving Lexie pinned under a large part of the plane, away from everyone else.

When Mark finally finds Lexie, she’s dying and everyone knows it. Mark stays with Lexie as she goes, and asks her not to die because he wants to be with her and he loves her.

Though Meredith and Derek work at the same hospital, they have different specialties, with Derek being the head of neurosurgery and Meredith focusing on general surgery. Derek likes working with Meredith and their relationship in the beginning was strengthened by the time they spend together in the operating room.

Derek wants to work with Meredith again and tries to woo her back into neuro. When Meredith asks what’s in neuro for her, Derek responds, “Me.”

After the plane crash, Mark Sloan is flown to Seattle Grace Mercy West with severe injuries and is in a coma. When he wakes from the coma, he experiences a “surge” which makes it seem like he’s going to pull through, but really it’s his body’s last bit of life and energy and everyone knows he won’t live much longer. Mark uses this time to say goodbye to his friends and he instills some parting wisdom on his protege, Jackson.
