SpiderMan Into The SpiderVerse 2 Trailer Confirms A Third Movie (What It Means)

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) not only reveals the first footage of the highly-anticipated sequel, but it promises a third movie as well. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse adapts the Ultimate Spider-Man comic backstory of Miles Morales, Peter Parker’s successor, while also introducing cinematic versions of beloved alternate universe Spider-Man variants, such as Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Gwen. Across the Spider-Verse looks to expand the roster of Spider-Man variants and perhaps the scale, given its title.

For a film featuring spider heroes across multiple realities, Into the Spider-Verse is a surprisingly personal film. The story focuses on Miles Morales’ journey to succeeding his universe’s Peter Parker—whose death he witnessed at the hands of Kingpin—and features other spider heroes as supporting characters. Each Spider-Man variant rose to the occasion and became a hero in their own right, and by the time that Miles dons his iconic black and red suit, he’s more than worthy of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the other heroes.

Across the Spider-Verse’s trailer begins with its predecessor’s small and personal scale, showing Miles Morales reuniting with Gwen Stacy, but then proceeds to take the series into new territory. In addition to showing new realities, the film’s newly-revealed title includes the subtitle “Part One,” confirming at least one more Spider-Verse film in the future. Whatever story is told in Across the Spider-Verse will require another film, strongly implying a much larger scale.

Into the Spider-Verse took place almost entirely within Mile Morales’ home universe. Across the Spider-Verse promises to venture into new territory by showing Miles Morales leaving his home reality and visiting new ones. The first new setting appears to be the home reality of Pavitr Prabhakar, from the Spider-Man: India comics and the second looks like Miguel O’Hara’s Nueva York.

This coincides with a cast of new spider heroes, such as the confirmed Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) and Takuya Yamashiro from the 1978 Spider-Man TV series. Moreover, Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man of a futuristic 2099 may have an expanded role in Across the Spider-Verse, following his brief cameo in the previous film. With new heroes and new realities for Miles Morales to interact with, Across the Spider-Verse will likely have a much larger scale than its predecessor, necessitating more than one film to tell its story.

Across the Spider-Verse could be adapting the comic version of the Spider-Verse storyline, with Morlun and the Inheritors threatening Spider-Man variants across the multiverse, requiring multiple films to show how Miles and his allies defeat them. The movie might also tie into the multiverse adventures of the MCU’s Phase 4, which features a Spider-Man film in which the multiverse is destabilized by Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. While the reason why remains a mystery, the title Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) confirms that Miles Morales’ stories are far from over.
