In addition to the uncomfortable dynamic of going on an official date with multiple suitors at once, the limited time needed for various contestants to stand out and catch the eye of the Bachelor can lead to wildly chaotic dust-ups, argumentative rows, and deeply unpredictable outcomes.

More entertaining yet, some Bachelors have even had multiple group dates go horribly awry in a single season, such as Chris Soules in Season 19 and Arie Luyuendyk Jr in Season 22.

Brad Womack’s Sports Illustrated Photoshoot – Season 15

In one of the most dramatic group dates in the history of the popular reality dating show, Season 15 bachelor Brad Womack was informed he’d be having a fun foursome Sports Illustrated swimsuit photo shoot along with Chantal O’Brien, Michelle Money, and Ashley Hebert. However, the date proved to be anything but a roll in the sand.

Jealousy, rage, and acrimony took hold as soon as the girls learned of the surprise group date at 2 a.m., prompting a near mutiny over having to dress in skimpy bikinis. But the real mess came when Michelle responded to Ashley’s racy photo shoot by dragging Brad into the sand and making out with home in front of the other girls, which Chantal claimed to Us Weekly was “absolute punishment.”

If awkward is the most accurate descriptor applied to group dates on The Bachelor, then the extremely gauche bikini skiing snow date Ben Flajnik went on in Season 16 deserves its flowers. Aside from functioning as a cheap and exploitative way to have young women strip down on the air, the tasteless date became even more calamitous once the skiers hit the slopes.

Manmade snow was produced to cover the hills of San Francisco, where a slew of scantily clad female suitors with zero skiing experience went crashing onto the ground and into ramping snowbanks. This one literally got messy.

Sean Lowe’s Polar Bear Challenge – Season 17

If love is in the air, the best way to capture it is to plunge headlong into a freezing puddle over water along with a potential suitor, right? Not in the case of Sean Lowe’s excruciating Polar Bear Plunge challenge, which dared bikini-clad women to dive into waters slightly above freezing.

Rather than reassure the women’s safety by promising to rescue them if need be, Sean romantically introduced the women to an EMT who went on to terrify them with warnings of hypothermia. One Bachelor contestant quit the challenge outright, while Tierra fell to the ground after exiting the frozen water, requiring medical attention including a wheelchair and breathing tubes. Worse yet, Sean did not marry Tierra after all the trouble.

Juan Pablo Galavis’ K-Pop Dance Date – Season 18

Disastrous humiliation took place during Juan Pablo Galavis’ K-Pop dance date in Season 18. When the production traveled to Korea, one of the group dates required Juan Pablo and his suitors to perform as backup dancers at a professional concert for the mega-popular K-pop band 2NE1.

With zero dancing experience to speak of, the date turned out to be an embarrassment of riches as the women flailed around the stage without a clue of how to dance professionally with perfectly synchronized choreography. A good laugh was had by all in the end, but as far as successful group dates go, the K-pop excursion was anything but. In fact, it was as messy and unorganized as possible.

Chris Soules’ Muddy MuckFest- Season 19

Chris Soules had no shortage of catastrophic group dates during Season 19. In one wildly untidy affair, a group date called the MuckFest entailed Chris’ female suitors dress-up in gorgeous wedding dresses, only to participate in a muddy obstacle course.

By the end of the race, the women and their dresses were slathered head to toe in mud, dirt, muck, grime, and every other dirty unflattering substance imaginable. Worse yet, the winner of the group date was summarily sent home after a one-on-one dinner with Chris later that night.

Chris Soules’ Paintball Zombie Date – Season 19

The other problematic group date Chris Soules went on in Season 19 was the zombie paintball challenge. The date required Chris’ suitors to fire as many paintballs at the horde of zombies as possible, but one contestant couldn’t help from going rogue and sabotaging the date.

Indeed, Ashley Salter went absolutely haywire during the challenge and began turning the paintball gun on regular Bachelor contestants rather than the zombie extras hired for the challenge. Ashley’s behavior was so flagrant that many viewers wondered if it was a scripted moment or if Ashley was a Bachelor contestant who was out of touch with reality.

Ben Higgins’ Love Lab Date – Season 20

What could possibly be messier than sniffing a sextet of female armpits in order to determine sexual chemistry? This is precisely what occurred during the “Love Lab” group date Ben Higgins went on in Season 20, which many fans feel is the most awkward in Bachelor history.

Blindfolded and told to sniff his various suitors and report the scent back to a pair of so-called doctors, the date got ugly when Ben described one of the women’s shirts as smelling sour. Awkward, embarrassing, and wildly untoward.

Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s Awkward Bowling – Season 22

No contestant in Bachelor history went on more bad group dates than Arie Lueyndyk Jr. in Season 22. The first worth noting is the off-putting bowling incident, which began with Arie licking his bowling bowl and ended with a big drunken fight over a cocktail hour.

After the game, Arie invited the winners from his group date who won the bowling ball game to join him in the lounge during cocktail hour. However, when Arie amended the policy to include all of his dates, the season villain Krystal made a massive scene, threw a huge tantrum, and boycotted happy hour in one of the biggest betrayals on The Bachelor. Nothing but gutter balls in Arie’s bowling group date.

Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s Messy Demolition Derby – Season 22

Considering his former time as a professional driver, Arie’s Demolition Derby group date seemed more than ideal in Season 22. Alas, when the challenge fomented traumatic memories regarding Annalise’s childhood bumper car accident, the date turned into an emotionally tearful endeavor and all but halted Arie’s chance at finding love.

Despite doing his best to console Annalise, Arie couldn’t reconcile his love of cars and driving with her seething hatred of such vehicles. What began as a simple day of fun turned into an emotionally fraught outing full of pain and sadness.

Matt James’ Boxing Date – Season 25

Producers were hard-pressed to come up with a unique new group date dynamic for Matt James in Season 25, largely due to the strictures of COVID-19. The answer? Make several of Matt’s female suitors fight each other in a boxing ring with real gloves, headgear, the works.

With no prior boxing experience, the date devolved into a dangerous maelstrom of violence that proved to be wildly counterproductive to the idea of finding love. At one point, Serena took such a serious blow to the nose, telling Insider that “it was getting dangerous, and that’s not what we’re going for today, we’re here to have fun.”
