In the sixth season of Grey’s Anatomy, the viewers saw an influx of new characters arrive after Seattle Grace merged with Mercy West. No one knew it at the time but two of the newbies would go on to have some of the best character arcs the show has ever seen. One of these people included Jackson Avery, who went from being the hospital’s golden boy to a successful and strong-minded leader.

However, this is not to say his journey has been easy. Like a roller coaster, there have also been plenty of moments where fans couldn’t help but loathe the plastic surgeon for the way he behaved. Keep reading to discover the five times Jackson was an overrated character and five times he was underappreciated.

10 Overrated: Arrogant First Impression

When the Mercy West residents arrived, Jackson didn’t make the best first impression. First, he nearly knocked Cristina over and completely ignored Alex in the elevator. He was also seen later mocking Alex for Izzie abandoning him and calling all the residents “douches.”

Don’t forget how he laughed at April’s negligence and gloated about being involved in Isaac’s surgery. Since Jackson was too concerned with glory, his arrogance led to him placing a patient in jeopardy. He was extremely unlikable at first.

9 Underrated: Compassionate Nature

As fans know, Jackson and his friends have all undergone some traumatic experiences. But the viewers have watched as Jackson suppressed his feelings to help his loved ones get better. This was particularly seen in season 11 when Jackson put his grief on hold to support April through hers, always looking after her. Even when April insisted she had to go to Jordan to heal, Jackson let her go. His compassionate nature was one of the best aspects of his personality.

8 Overrated: Stubborn

On many occasions, Jackson has frustrated fans when he allows his stubborn nature to affect his relationships. His close-minded views on religion saw him and April often fight over their children’s upbringing. Jackson also took weeks to apologize to Stephanie for humiliating her in front of their colleagues or own up to his actions.

Don’t forget how he got sick and refused to allow anyone to take care of him because he didn’t want to look weak.

7 Underrated: Leadership Skills

Although Jackson is deemed the golden boy of the hospital due to his family’s legacy, it feels like characters are maybe overlooking some of his personal achievements. For one, Jackson has taken to the leadership role quite well.

Fans first saw this when he was revealed to be the Gunther, stepping up in the OR once it descended into chaos. In one of the more underrated scenes, Jackson stood his ground against Tom and kicked him out of the OR when he tried putting the hospital’s reputation ahead of his patient’s wishes. Jackson really did excel in an authoritative role.

6 Overrated: Patronizing

Most fans will agree that some of Jackson’s more annoying traits include his condescending attitude. He may not be aware of it himself, but he has angered many of his colleagues when he patronized and belittled them. For instance, in the season 15 finale, Maggie blew up at Jackson for trying to shape her into something she’s not.

This was also an issue that cropped up in his marriage to April, where the plastic surgeon got Owen to pull April from surgery because he “knew what was best for her.” It leaves the impression that he is overbearing and a little entitled.

5 Underrated: Friendship With April

While most people pay a lot of attention to the romantic aspect of April and Jackson’s relationship, no one ever seems to appreciate the friendship side of things. In the aftermath of the hospital shooting, April and Jackson grew closer as they bonded over the loss of their best friends.

Jackson was seen to be quite protective over the trauma surgeon and showed joy when she won Chief resident. Even after they split, Jackson made it clear that he still wanted to be April’s friend. He was genuinely happy for her when he stood as a witness at her wedding. An underrated friendship indeed…

4 Overrated: A Terrible Boyfriend

While a lot of people believe Jackson would make the perfect boyfriend, they may want to re-evaluate their opinion when they realize how badly he treats his partners. He shipped Lexie off to her sister’s because he didn’t want her to meet his mother. He also humiliated Stephanie after declaring his love for April in front of his colleagues.

Then there’s the time he served April divorce papers at work and nearly cheated on Vic when he almost kissed Maggie. The plastic surgeon needs to take some time for himself because he’s becoming too much of a womanizer.

3 Underrated: Standing Up To His Grandfather

When the show first introduced Harper Avery, everyone worshipped the ground he walked on. Even Catherine was seen to cater to his every whim. However, one person who wasn’t afraid to stand up to him was Jackson. When he reserved Jackson a Mass Gen, he was livid when the plastic surgeon decided to do his residency at Mercy West.

Jackson would also call his grandfather out whenever he was being inappropriate to his friends, and would demand respect when he belittled him. Fans have to give Jackson credit for trying to create a legacy separate from his grandfather’s.

2 Overrated: His Relationship With Catherine

Everyone knows that Jackson allows his mother to have too much say over his life. Not only did he ship Lexie off to her sister’s house but he also told Stephanie to run away so his mother couldn’t interrogate her.

Catherine mocked Jackson for going into plastics, forced him to sign a pre-nuptial agreement, and almost ruined his relationship with April by meddling. What makes it worse is that Jackson complains but never says anything. It’s completely unhealthy.

1 Underrated: Brave

Over his ten years on the show, fans have seen Jackson become an unsung hero as he displayed true courage in the toughest of times. He managed to prevent more casualties in the hospital mass-shooting when he tricked Gary Clark into believing Derek was dead.

Jackson risked his life in the storm after a bus exploded while he was trying to save a little girl. he also wasted no time trying to search for Stephanie when it was revealed she was trapped with a dangerous patient while the hospital was on fire. The guy deserves a medal for his bravery.
