The Mandalorian Whats the Significance of the Beskar Staff

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Mandalorian “Chapter 13: The Jedi,” now streaming on Disney+

Following their encounter with Bo-Katan Kryze on Trask and a brief reunion with their pals Greef Karga and Cara Dune on Nevarro, Din Djarin and the Child finally meet the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano on this week’s episode of The Mandalorian. Over the course of their adventure together on the forest planet Corvus, Din also gains ownership of a shiny new weapon: Morgan Elsbeth’s Beskar staff — a tool that could play a significant role in the rest of Season 2, and beyond.

The magistrate of the city Calodan on Corvus, Morgan Elsbeth tries, but fails, to get Din to do her evil bidding by offering him her Beskar staff as payment for killing Ahsoka. Because it’s made of the same alloy used to create his armor, the item is Mandalorian in origin and holds great personal meaning for Din. It’s also an incredibly powerful weapon that can stand up to a lightsaber, as “Chapter 13: The Jedi” illustrates when Morgan uses it to duel Ahsoka. For those reasons, Din is more than happy to accept the staff when Ahsoka gives it to him after beating Morgan.

It’s possible Morgan’s staff is actually a bevii’ragir: a traditional Mandalorian hunting spear with a removable counterbalance weight on the non-pointy end that can serve as either a weapon in combat or a walking stick. The bevii’ragir was introduced in the Star Wars Legends Republic Commando novel Order 66 in 2008 but has yet to be made an official part of the Disney Star Wars canon. Then again, The Mandalorian executive producer and “Chapter 13: The Jedi” director Dave Filoni has never been hesitant in the past about taking elements from the Legends mythos and reintegrating them into the new continuity.

Case in point, it was Filoni who brought Legends villain Grand Admiral Thrawn into the new canon when he made him the big bad in Star Wars Rebels Season 3 and 4. Thanks to “Chapter 13: The Jedi,” we now know that Morgan worked for Thrawn, who made a habit of collecting objects of cultural significance to his enemies in order to better understand and, ultimately, find a way to destroy them. Furthermore, it’s likely because of Thrawn that Morgan came into possession of the Beskar staff to begin with. No doubt, he would be pleased to learn she followed in his footsteps by using her knowledge of Beskar and its importance to Din to manipulate him in her campaign against Ahsoka.

Now that Din has the Beskar staff, it’s plausible The Mandalorian will confirm it’s a bevii’ragir the next time he comes face to face with another group of Mandalorians, be it Bo-Katan and the Nite Owls or other members of The Watch. It’s also very likely Din will use the staff in a future one-on-one fight with the Darksaber-wielding Moff Gideon now that it’s been established the weapon can withstand the blows of a lightsaber. Moff Gideon actor Giancarlo Esposito hinted at an intense close-quarters battle along those lines when he admitted to breaking multiple Darksaber props while filming Season 2.

Beginning with Bo-Katan’s appearance in “Chapter 11: The Heiress,” The Mandalorian Season 2 has begun to set up the idea that reclaiming Mandalore and its heritage will be a major focus of the show in the future. Din gaining the Beskar staff feels like a natural continuation of this thread, particularly if it turns out to be an object of deeper significance like a bevii’ragir. This would also move Din further away from being a typical gunslinger and closer to someone who prefers to use an older and more traditional weapon in combat, which feels in keeping with how the series has started to lean more heavily into its samurai influences by bringing the Jedi into the picture. As such, Din’s Beskar staff may play a key role in events to come.
