“Cotton Eye Joe” remains one of the most popular country songs in history, particularly the 1994 version by Rednex. And now that song has inspired a fan to create his very own comic.

Eric Gladstone, aka TrueBlueFriend, posted a one-shot comic page to Reddit. The comic, which is written and lettered by Gladstone and illustrated by Ron Joseph, features a supernatural twist on the country classic. Gladstone simply wrote in the post, “I wrote a very dumb one-pager about the most famous song by Rednex.”

The comic features a down-on-his-luck farmer, sitting in his house. He and his dog then see movement in the barn and go to investigate. Upon entering the barn, the titular Cotton Eye Joe leaps out at them both. Cotton Eye Joe is depicted in the comic as a scarecrow-esque figure, with an eerie rictus and bales of cotton where his eyes should be.

Rednex was not the first band to cover “Cotton Eye Joe,” as several fans pointed out in the comments. The song has its roots in the pre-Civil War era, and has been covered by a multitude of artists including Nina Simone, The Moody Brothers and Irish band The Chieftains.
