Grey’s Anatomy fans enjoyed following Izzie’s journey, but while she was a passionate and determined doctor, she definitely made some mistakes.

When looking back on Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy, many fans focus on her dramatic romantic life, as she dated her best friend George, fell for patient Denny, and ended up raising a family with Alex. But Izzie’s journey on the popular hospital drama is also about her love of medicine and wish to help patients. Her character arc is compelling, as she started off as a young intern and the last that fans heard of her, she was happily living on a farm with Alex and their children.

Like the other main characters on the show, Izzie isn’t a perfect doctor. Based on her storylines, she’s definitely competent but sometimes she lets her personal opinions or personality get in the way of doing her job the way that she should have.

9 Good: She Ignored Gossip And Focused On Her Internship

At the beginning of Grey’s Anatomy, gossip began spreading at the hospital in the episode ‘No Man’s Land’ as everyone learned that Izzie used to be a model. While people thought less of her, Izzie wasn’t ashamed, as she was able to pay for medical school and she knew that she kept her eye on the prize.

Izzie was never afraid to talk about how tough her childhood was and viewers like that she’s been able to build a great for herself. Izzie is a prime example of a character who makes big changes in her life and looks to a brighter future without forgetting about who she is.

8 Not: She Broke The Rules To Help Denny

After falling in love with Denny, Izzie wanted to do anything to keep him around, and she cut his LVAD wire so he could get a heart transplant. While Izzie was trying to save his life and felt she was justified in committing the illegal, this makes her a bad doctor, as she broke the rules and could have been fired. She might have even lost the ability to practice medicine.

While fans understand Izzie’s motivations, it’s hard to support her actions here, and it’s an example of a time when she followed her heart instead of her gut instincts. Of all the Grey’s Anatomy storylines that aged badly, this one comes up a lot.

7 Good: She Wanted To Solve Every Medical Case And Help Every Patient

In the season 2 episode ‘Bring The Pain,’ Izzie worked on a case that saw a woman admitted into the hospital with a heart attack. One thing she did notice was that this woman had a history of chest pains and they occurred on the same day, every year, with no one knowing what the problem was.

Izzie was obsessed with figuring this out and this proves that while she can make some huge mistakes, she is ultimately a great doctor. She wanted to solve every case and help everyone she came across, and she found it hard to move on, as she took everything very seriously. The best doctors are the ones who are so passionate about their work that they think about it all the time. It’s not really possible for surgery to not be a 24/7, all-encompassing career.

6 Not: She Made A Terrible Mistake And Gave A Patient The Wrong Medicine

In season 6, Izzie gave someone the wrong amount of medicine, and she was fired as a result. While it’s true that everyone makes mistakes, this was dangerous, as the patient couldn’t receive the kidney transplant that they were waiting for.

While fans sometimes sympathized with Izzie, understanding that she’s got a pure heart and a lot of love for her patients, this is a moment that’s tough to move on from. It often seemed like Izzie was swept up by the hospital drama and couldn’t focus on her job, which was the most crucial thing of all.

5 Good: She Wanted To Continue Surgery Even After Becoming Wealthy

When Denny passed away, Izzie was understandably devastated, and in season 3, his dad told her that Denny left her $8.7 million. This was such an overwhelming amount of money and while Izzie thought about leaving her job, she knew that she loved surgery and couldn’t stop.

This definitely makes her an amazing doctor, as she didn’t have to continue her career, but she decided to go for it anyway. Izzie knew that she wouldn’t be happy or personally fulfilled if she turned her back on medicine forever, and that’s admirable.

4 Not: She Brought Her Personal Life To Work Too Many Times

Of all the confusing Izzie storylines, many fans didn’t like watching Izzie date George. This became a huge problem, as he cheated on his wife, Callie, with Izzie, and then, in season 4, she publically humiliated Callie by trying to fight her in front of their peers.

Between her romance with George and her complicated love stories with Denny and Alex, Izzie often focused on her personal drama, and this didn’t always make her the best doctor. While the characters on this show do date one another and many storylines are focused on their dating lives, Izzie could have done a better job of separating her love life from her job.

3 Good: She Was Ready And Willing To Do Her Job No Matter What

In the season 4 episode ‘A Change is Gonna Come,’ Izzie began working on a deer, and her interns didn’t understand why this was happening. While they found it laughable, Izzie was passionate about medicine and determined to do her job.

This is a great example of what a solid doctor Izzie is. While she might have wanted to be inside the hospital, working on patients and helping people, she accepted her situation. Not everyone would do this, and her work ethic and tough attitude are two things that fans appreciate about her.

2 Not: She Didn’t Always Think Before She Spoke

In the season 2 episode ‘Break On Through,’ Izzie was seen to get invested in a case when a pregnant teenager was admitted to the hospital. When the teenager and Izzie were alone, Izzie decides to tell her something personal about her life and speaks to the teen about what the future might look like for her.

While Izzie had the best intentions and did help the young patient, she did cross a boundary by providing a personal opinion. It could have backfired too as the patient and their family could have reacted badly. Sometimes she did need to be careful about what she said.

1 Good: She Treated All Of Her Patients The Same

In the fourth season episode ‘Let the Truth Sting,” Izzie treated an elderly man named Charlie who didn’t want to live anymore. In a sweet scene, she told him that she would be there for him, and she showed him a lot of respect and compassion in that moment. Sadly, he passed away. Izzie proved that she was a strong doctor as she treated all of her patients the same. She was frustrated by Charlie at first, but she showed viewers that she could offer him the same level of care that she gave everyone else.
