ABC’s hit medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, has been on the air for 17 seasons so far. Over the years, its main characters have always been portrayed as among the best in their field. Since the show launched its first season their doctors have been known for pushing their limits and sometimes, even thinking out of the box.

No matter what type of case they are dealing with, everyone’s favorite doctors are brilliant, pulling off ‘miracles’ left and right. However, there are also times when they have made the wrong call. And in some cases, at the cost of someone’s life.

10 Nico Kim

Nico was only introduced in the recent seasons on the show. Nonetheless, he’s been constantly making his presence known. Fans were able to see why many patients were at ease around him, especially when it was clear that he had a great bedside manner. The viewers will never forget how Nico was more than willing to help out an elderly patient by translating Korean for her when she was looking for her long-lost love.

However, despite his compassion for patients, Nico has also made a few mistakes at work. Once, he committed a grave error while performing a procedure that involved injecting cement into a patient’s spine to treat his back pain. It destroyed his pulmonary artery after the cement leaked. Unfortunately, this resulted in the patient’s death.

9 Ben Warren

Ben was a doctor at Grey-Sloan, specializing in both anesthesiology and general surgery. At present, he also happens to be a firefighter, making him one of the most capable doctors on both Grey Sloan and Station 19’s team. While Ben has been a part of many iconic moments, many fans will agree that one of the bravest things he did was lead the search for Stephanie following a hospital explosion.

However, as dedicated as he is to the job, Ben can also go too far sometimes. A case in point was the time that he performed two surgeries unsupervised which resulted in the deaths of two patients.

8 Maggie Pierce

From the beginning, Maggie made no secret about being an exceptional doctor. After all, Maggie started her cardiothoracic surgery fellowship when she was only 25. And when she joined Grey Sloan, she showed just how brilliant she could be.

For instance, when April was hypothermic and without a pulse, Maggie was among those who were determined to get her warm and treat her. While many of the doctors had resigned themselves to the fact that April could be dead, Maggie refused to give up resuscitating her and managed to bring her back once she spotted a V-fib on her charts.

However, sometimes Maggie allowed her personal feelings to blind her judgment. Let’s not forget that she almost made a mistake by willingly stopping the tests being conducted on Richard, insisting that he had Alzheimer’s despite her other colleagues suggesting otherwise.

7 Teddy Altman

Teddy is, undoubtedly, one of the most capable doctors on the team. She made a huge impression upon her arrival at Grey Sloan, quickly taking Cristina under her wing and did a great job teaching her about becoming a great cardiothoracic surgeon.

However, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t crossed a boundary. Teddy can also be unprofessional in the OR. Following the death of her ex-husband, she made Cristina recount his procedure over and over again until she had a solid picture of what happened. While she didn’t have any ill intentions behind it, many of her colleagues weren’t happy that she put Cristina through weeks of emotional torment.

6 Catherine Avery

Catherine may appear stern most of the time, but she is a doctor (and part-owner of Grey Sloan) who cares about her doctors deeply. While Catherine hasn’t had the easiest of relationships with April, fans felt that Catherine did show she cared for the trauma surgeon when she found her crying in the storeroom.

On the other hand, it must also be noted that Catherine is quite a controversial character. In season 14, it was revealed that Catherine had covered up various sexual assault accusations against Harper Avery (Shannon Chan-Kent) by asking the victims to sign NDAs. This was a storyline that left fans divided.

5 Owen Hunt

As a doctor with combat experience, Owen is ready for just about anything. And so, when a car suddenly plows into the ER, this doctor realized that he had to act quickly before a flower delivery van ends up hitting Cristina.

And while he acted courageously that day, it must also be noted that Owen nearly got an Asian patient named Dave Oyadomari (Scott Keiji Takeda) killed after incorrectly diagnosing him with appendicitis. After sending him away with antibiotics, Owen was surprised to discover the patient had returned to the hospital and was suffering from right-sided diverticulitis (which is a condition more prominent among Asian patients).

While the patient ended up coming out fine, Nico and Bailey did tell Owen that his mistake could have been fatal and that he should always be educating himself and expanding his medical knowledge.

4 Alex Karev

Alex was among the first interns introduced on the show. Initially, it did appear as though Alex would be overshadowed by the rest of group professionally. However, that all changed when Addison convinced him to specialize in pediatrics.

Since then, Alex had become the foremost pediatric surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial. During his early internship days though, this pediatric surgeon ended up causing a patient’s death. Robert Martin (Curtis Armstrong) came to the hospital with saline imbalance. And while Alex prescribed the right medication, he also mistakenly asked the nurses to administer more than the required dose, which, unfortunately, led to Robert’s eventual death.

3 Richard Webber

When fans were introduced to Miranda on the show, she appeared intimidating and bossy. However, fans also realize that she was slow to advocate for herself when it comes to career advancement. Fortunately, Richard (James Pickens Jr.) saw Miranda’s potential and put her on the path towards becoming the Chief of Surgery.

On the other hand, Richard also made an error of judgment once when he accused a patient of having a drinking problem. As it turns out, it was revealed that the patient had auto-brewery syndrome. What surprised fans was that Richard never apologized for his actions or to the teacher for pushing him.

2 Miranda Bailey

Richard may have wanted Miranda to become the new chief, but Catherine had a different candidate in mind. And although it looked like Miranda was going to give up at first, fans saw a renewed determination in her while she was working on a patient in the OR.

“She [McConnell] would be excellent for the job but that’s not the point,” Bailey explains. “I believe in this hospital and what it can do.” As she advanced in her role though, Bailey was still seen to make a few fatal mistakes. As many fans know, Bailey was inadvertently fault for Eli Riger’s (Saul Rubinek) death after she didn’t notice he was allergic to the antibiotics she had prescribed him.

1 Meredith Grey

Towards the ending of the show’s 16th season, the surgeons all came together to try and work out what was wrong with Richard. While many suspected that he might have Alzheimer’s disease, Meredith believed it was something else. Eventually, she and DeLuca manage to make a breakthrough after Richard reveals that he is experiencing numbness in his toes. After pushing more tests to be done, Meredith realizes he’s been suffering from cobalt poisoning.

However, Meredith’s willingness to go above standard procedure has often got her into a lot of trouble. Several seasons ago, Meredith also displays the same dedication to a child patient. In fact, she ended up committing insurance fraud just so the child would receive the treatment she needed. Because of this, she loses her job and almost her medical license.
