Henry Cavill gives his reaction to Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Cavill played Superman in three DCEU films for Zack Snyder, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and, finally, Justice League. Cavill was cast by Snyder in 2013 to play Clark Kent/Superman in what is the first entry in the current DC universe of films at Warner Bros., commonly referred to as the DCEU. Cavill has since moved on to the role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, which debuts season 2 on Friday, December 17th.
Cavill was also part of the Justice League reshoots with Joss Whedon, which prompted the “mustache-gate” controversy for the actor. Cavill was in the midst of shooting Mission: Impossible – Fallout and wasn’t allowed to shave off his mustache for that role, which meant that filmmakers had to digitally erase it for Justice League, which ended up being more of a disaster than initially anticipated. Whedon took over the film after Snyder left due to a family tragedy, compounded by constant battles with the studio over the final cut. After the failure of the Joss Whedon theatrical cut and a vocal fanbase wanting to see Snyder’s vision, Justice League was given a new life (and a 4-hour director’s cut) that was released earlier this year on HBO Max.
In an interview with Kevin McCarthy at Fox 5 Washington DC, Cavill was asked what he thought of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which is one of the few times the actor has publicly spoken about it since its release. After giving props to co-star Ben Affleck in the interview, Cavill says that he “really enjoyed” Snyder’s cut, citing the importance of getting the director’s version of the story out to audiences. He also mentions the “tenderness” in the film, which he believes was “essential for the representation of Superman.” Check out the full quote and video below:
Justice League, Snyder cut. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a wonderful way of Zack getting his version of the story out and important to do, too. I thought there was a wonderful tenderness to the movie, which existed and that I think was essential for the representation of Superman.
Cavill was also asked about his potential return as Superman, a question that continues to haunt the actor, with no clear answer on the horizon. The actor says he would “love to play Superman again,” but acknowledges that it’s a far more complex dilemma than just his desire to do so. “It’s not just down to my desire, it’s down to a lot of things,” he says. WB currently has two announced Superman projects on the way, one of them being a Black Superman reboot project from JJ Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates. The other project is a Val-Zod mini-series for HBO Max, which is being produced by (and may star) Michael B. Jordan.
It’s been a long journey for Cavill as Superman. Both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice took some criticism for the darker tones explored with the character, while Justice League became a bit of a nightmare in the process of Snyder leaving, Whedon taking over, and then Snyder coming back to finish his cut. Cavill’s commitment to the role and fan appreciation of him as the character are strong, but there seems to be a lack of faith at WB in having the actor put the cape back on. If anything, Zack Snyder’s Justice League popularity set up Cavill’s return to the role in a significant way, which should absolutely be explored, particularly with such fervent support for his presence as the Clark Kent/Superman of the DCEU. If nothing else, the proliferation of content on streaming, including HBO Max, should reopen the doors for his return, be it with Snyder or otherwise.
