She may not have got many storylines but Chyler Leigh’s portrayal of Lexie Grey was amazing. She really knew how to execute those emotional scenes.

Meredith’s half-sister Lexie Grey might no longer be in Grey’s Anatomy but fans have fond memories of the Seattle Grace surgical resident. Her rollercoaster relationships with Mark Sloan and Meredith, as well as her few friendships, make for some of the medical drama’s best ever story arcs.

Lexie comes off as non-confrontational during her early days in the series but being surrounded by tough doctors makes her grow fierce by the day. She airs out her feelings on the regular and doesn’t hesitate to go after what she wants. Her evolving personality leads to a couple of emotional moments.

10 “We Killed Him… The Hospital, Sloan, Us. We Were Not Prepared.”

In season 4’s “Crash: Part 2,” a patient in critical condition is placed in immediate danger after the hospital cannot find an available OR. Lexie and Mark move him into a sterile procure room, where they attempt to prevent him from bleeding out. Unfortunately, he dies.

Cristina bumps into a devasted Lexie later on and tries to comfort her. Cristina assures her that incidents like those happen all the time. She even assures her that the hospital saves more people than it loses. Lexie isn’t convinced. She claims that everyone at the hospital has blood on their hands for the patient’s death.

9 “How The Hell Did You Get Me In This Position Twice?! You Are Unbelievable!”

In season 7’s “Don’t Deceive Me (Please Don’t Go),” Mark learns that Callie is pregnant with his baby. He breathes a sigh of relief when Callie tells him that she just wants the baby, not him.

Mark is nervous about telling Lexie because the last time a baby was involved, she dumped him. Callie pressures him to tell her anyway. While Lexie is cooking dinner for Mark, he breaks the news. As expected, she is less than thrilled about the new development. She voices her disappointment about him leaving her behind, before storming out.

8 “He’s A Liar!”

In season 4’s “Forever Young,” Lexie and Meredith’s father, Thatcher Grey, finds himself in the ER once again after a drunken incident. Meredith attends to him and he tells her not to inform Lexie that he is there. He also explains that he was only drinking because it’s Susan’s birthday.

Meredith bumps into Lexie later on and asks her if she knows about their father’s state. Lexie already knows. She tells Meredith that Thatcher is lying about Susan’s birthday since she was born in March. Lexie then goes on a lengthy speech, lamenting Meredith for implying she was a bad daughter when she didn’t know the full story.

7 “I Had This Fantasy About My Big Sister And You Have Failed To Live Up To It.”

Lexie and Meredith have had their fair share of sibling arguments. In season 4’s “Losing My Mind,” Cristina tells Lexie that Meredith is often dismissive of her because she doesn’t like her. Meredith resents the fact that Lexie always acts righteously because their father didn’t abandon her.

After Meredith tests Lexie’s patience and pushes her away, Lexie decides to give her a piece of her mind. She tells her big sister how she had always had high expectations, and while Meredith has failed to live up to them, she still loves her regardless. It was nice to see that Lexie refused to give up on her.

6 “I Am A Nice Person!”

Alex is more of a consolation lover for Lexie. After angering Alex at work in season 6’s “Hook, Line, and Sinner,” he refuses to give her a beer when they get home. Lexie isn’t too happy about Alex’s attitude. She proceeds to lay down the law in a rather emotional but adorable manner. She lectures him, declaring that she is a good person and everyone knows it.

She reminds him that he is the one who keeps coming up with annoying nicknames for her. She then urges him to fix his personal issues and not let his anger spill on to her. She also warns him that she will end their ‘relationship’ if he doesn’t start acting right.

5 “I’m Begging You To Help Him Because As Crappy As He Was To You, He Was Wonderful To Me.”

Thatcher Grey returns to the hospital in season 6 due to a failed liver. He needs a transplant but Lexie isn’t a match. Meredith is a match but she is reluctant to help him because they had quite a strained relationship.

Lexie begs Meredith to save their father’s life. Despite the fact that he “abandoned” Meredith, Lexie says he stepped up for her. He never missed dance practices or graduations. She claims that there are two sides of their father and they were each granted the opposite side. Lexie’s love for Thatcher is evident, but Meredith still isn’t convinced. Eventually, Meredith decides to go through with the operation out of love for Lexie.

4 “They Think We’re Ugly But I Know We’re Beautiful And We Can Adapt To A Hostile Environment.”

In season 5’s “Stand By Me,” interns gossip about Lexie, implying that she gets chosen to be on special surgeries because she is sleeping with Mark. Lexie realizes what’s happening and decides to make a point.

When Mark walks past the interns at the Nurses Section, Lexie pulls him over and kisses him. She reassures Mark that, despite people gossiping about him dating his junior, they’ll be fine because their opinions are what matters the most in the end. It’s a power move that impresses Mark even further,

3 “He Forgot I Was Even There. He Left Me Lying In Dirty Dishwater.”

During a random chat with Lexie, Jackson wonders how people manage to get work done at the hospital since everyone is romantically involved with a colleague. He then asks her about her and Mark.

Lexie is still annoyed and frustrated that Mark tried to hit on her again after he mistook her for another woman. She then vents her frustrations further about Mark forgetting that she existed. He wanted to start a family with her then he just abandoned her.

2 “It’s Like You’re A Disease. It’s Like I’m Infected By Mark Sloan.”

This quote carries even more weight because Lexie says it a few days before both of them die. In season 8’s “Let The Bad Times Roll,” Mark allows her to perform an important surgery that goes well. She bumps into him outside the hospital and can’t stop thanking him for the opportunity.

After suppressing her feelings for so long, she also lets out a 2-minute declaration of love to him. She tells him that no matter how many times she tries to move on, something keeps drawing her back to him. However, as soon as she is done talking and wondering if he reciprocates, Julia appears, making for a rather awkward moment.

1 “Mark, I’m Dying!”

The most emotional Lexie quote is also her last. During the plane crash, Lexie is severely injured. She can’t feel her hands while her legs and arms are completely crushed. She has trouble breathing so Mark orders Cristina to get the oxygen tanks. Cristina is hesitant and Mark wonders why.

Lexie tells Mark that Cristina knows she won’t make it. When Cristina goes to get the tanks Lexie tells Mark that she is dying. She instructs him to tell Meredith that she loves her. She also tells Mark about the life she wishes they could have had. However, just as Cristina and Meredith return with the supplies, they find it is too late and Lexie is already dead. It was a heartbreaking loss for all.
