Over the last seventeen years, fans have seen the surgeons of Grey Sloan Memorial experience some good and bad moments.

For years, Grey’s Anatomy has provided fans with emotions ranging from laughter and tears to joy and hatred. The characters are diverse and the cast is large but everyone has those special character arcs and storylines they tie themselves to. But what makes Grey’s so unique is that no one is without flaw.

These doctors save lives every day but there are times where they are the ones who need saving too. Great moments have occurred over the 17 seasons but each character has had their own share of wins and losses.

10 Meredith Grey

Best (Meeting Derek)

Despite the outcome, meeting Derek was, by far, one of the best things that ever happened to Meredith. Up there with her Catherine Fox Award, most fans will agree that Derek did have a positive influence on her life. He made her realize that she wanted certain things in her life and gave her the family she always dreamed of with Zola, Bailey, and Ellis.

Worst (Left Alone)

Meredith is a strong character but also one who has dealt with tremendous loss over the 17 seasons. It began with her mother Ellis and then Lexie. This was then followed by Cristina, Derek, Nathan, her father, and now Alex. Everyone around Meredith keeps leaving either by choice or by death.

9 Jackson Avery

Best (Webber)

Jackson can be a bit spoiled at times. He was raised by a single mother who knew nothing but work, success, and money. While Jackson has a strong work ethic, what he was missing most was a positive father figure in his life. When his mom began dating Richard, that changed. He views Richard as a father and for that Jackson has changed his outlook on things.

Worst (Losing Samuel)

Nothing could be worse than losing a child. Jackson didn’t have a solid father figure growing up, so when Jackson found out that April was expecting Samuel, he was determined to be a better father than his own. But then tragedy struck and not only did Jackson lose his child, but it was also the beginning to the end of his marriage with April.

8 Miranda Bailey

Best (Becoming A Mentor)

When the show started, the writers had to figure which character would be the one to look over the young interns. Miranda Bailey was chosen and there could not have been a better choice. She’s molded, taught, fought, and stood up for her medical kids and still has their backs 17 seasons in. Since most of them are now award-winning, successful, surgeons, is it any surprise that her opinions are valued highly by the medical community.

Worst (Miscarriage)

Miranda Bailey is that character you just love to root for. Every significant life or career milestone she reaches, fans are always glad to support and cheer her on. So when Bailey told Ben that they were expecting, everyone was thrilled as one could see how happy they were. However, as the episodes went on, fans were heartbroken to discover that Bailey had a miscarriage. The loss was seen to affect her greatly.

7 Richard Webber

Best (Meredith)

While Meredith is not his daughter, they have been a part of each other’s lives for decades. Fans would like to believe that because of Meredith, Webber is still in the medical field. Having her around gives Webber a purpose to keep going as the former Chief promised Ellis that he would look out for her. Also, thanks to Meredith being there, he was given the chance to meet Maggie.

Worst (Jeopardizing A Patient’s Life)

Webber is a fine surgeon, Chief, and teacher. However, the pressures of the job have impacted his mental health greatly as fans soon discovered that he is recovering from alcoholism. Unfortunately, before Richard got the help he needed, there were a few occasions where he came to work under the influence and operated on a patient, putting their life in jeopardy (circa season 6).

6 Jo Wilson

Best (Facing Her Past)

Jo has been through plenty before coming to Grey Sloan Memorial. She’s been homeless, abused, and abandoned. However, since she has sought out professional help, she has begun to heal. After confronting her ex-husband and then tracking down her biological mother, Jo has begun to get closure in those painful aspects of her life.

Worst (Losing Alex)

While it appears that Jo may have come on top, especially financially, when Alex left her to be with Izzie Stevens and their kids, the truth is, it may have set Jo back. Jo just dealt with her past and Alex added more trauma. Fans are still not able to forgive him for ghosting her and reveal he was leaving via letter.

5 Alex Karev

The Best (Finding His Family)

As bad as his departure was from his job, friends, and wife, what Alex found after leaving Seattle was what he’s been looking for his entire life. He got the woman of his dreams but he also got his family. Izzie, plus two kids, was the perfect way for Alex to end his story.

Worst (His Youth)

Alex is by far still a fan favorite for Grey’s Anatomy fans. He came from the bottom but what has always stood in his way was the lack of childhood he had. Since Alex’s father left when he was young, Alex felt that he had to step up and take care of the family. However, by the tenth season, it was clear that Alex held a deep resentment towards his father for making him take on a responsibility he was unprepared for.

4 Owen Hunt

Best (Kids)

Owen has always wanted kids. While it didn’t work out with Yang, Owen did eventually become a parent by adopting Leo and then again when Teddy gave birth to Allison. For him, it has been a saving grace of sorts. No more is Owen looked upon as the bad decision-maker or is he as volatile as he once was.

Worst (His Emotions)

Owen is the master of awful decision-making on Greys. Oftentimes, his emotions got in the way of his characters’ progress. From lashing out and then cheating on Cristina to flying half-way around the world for Teddy while still figuring out his relationship with Amelia. Owen’s emotions are the worst things in his life.

3 Teddy Altman

Best (Marrying Henry)

Henry entered Grey Sloan Memorial seeking help but couldn’t afford the care that was needed. Teddy, like most of the characters on the show, felt a need to help. Instead of forging papers, she had a better idea. Teddy married Henry to put him under her insurance. However, things took a turn when they actually fell in love.

Worst (Tom Koracick)

Teddy has always known that Owen was the one for her. However, they both have either denied their feelings or pushed them to the back, too worried about their friendship. But when Teddy came back to Seattle pregnant, the once best friends decided to give a relationship a go. But Teddy got caught up with Tom Koracick and from there, an affair grew, which may have cost Teddy dearly.

2 Derek Shephard

Best (Not Giving Up)

After the plane crash, Derek’s hand was severely injured and for while, it appeared as if one of the best surgeons in the world would never be able to perform surgery again. But Derek eventually recovered and healed. He fought when he wanted to give up and even surprised himself in the process.

Worst (Death)

What if? What if Derek had taken another route? What if he was too much in a rush to stop? These are the thoughts that fans have had since Derek died. He had a good heart and for that, he had no choice but to stop. He’s done a few questionable things over the years but dying is by far the worst thing that has happened to him.

1 Cristina Yang

Best (Ambitious Drive)

Cristina has always been about her profession. While other characters joked and took things for granted, it was always Cristina who reminded them who they were and why they were there. Her drive is what forced her to leave. Too many bad things were happening to and around her. She wanted more for herself and her career.

Worst (Love)

As great of a surgeon she was, the one thing Cristina could not overcome was her inability to love properly. She thought she found the one in Preston Burke then figured it was all daisies with Owen Hunt. In the end, love was holding Cristina back. It often left her in shambles and alone which was not good for her career.
