Greys Anatomy Why Callie & Addison Arent Real Friends

Grey’s Anatomy has featured many incredible friendships during its 16 season run (and counting), such as Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang, and Arizona Robbins and Richard Webber. However, despite all these amazing friendships, there are some that have managed to slip under the radar over time.

Callie Torres was first introduced to the series in Season 2, and she seemingly only existed initially to act as a love interest. The same could also be said for Addison Montgomery. However, Callie and Addison managed to form a fun friendship, but it could be argued that they weren’t as close as we originally thought.

10 Addison Was Callie’s Boss

Although Callie spent most of her time on Grey’s Anatomy as an attending orthopedic surgeon, in her first few seasons, she was just a resident. However, when Addison joined the series in its first season, not only was she an attending, she was also a double board-certified OB/GYN.

Addison wasn’t directly in charge of Callie, as the two worked in different surgical departments but she was most definitely Callie’s superior, professionally speaking. This didn’t stop the two women from becoming friends but surely it must have been awkward occasionally, knowing that one of your friends is your boss.

9 Addison Never Said Goodbye To Callie

Although Addison remained in the Grey’s Anatomy universe for almost nine seasons, she left the medical drama at the end of Season 3. All was not lost however, as Addison was given her own spin off show, Private Practice, due to the popularity of the character.

The first episode of Private Practice showed Addison telling Richard that she was leaving Seattle Grace Hospital. Richard briefly tried to talk her out of it, to no avail. However, Addison didn’t say goodbye to anyone else, not even Callie, who she was previously shown to have been close with.

The first time Callie got married was to George O’Malley. Callie and George were not a popular couple by any means as they clearly weren’t suited to each other. However, George’s dad had recently died and so he and Callie eloped and got married. No one knew until they got back, especially Addison.

When Callie got married for the second time, it was a much happier occasion. She had recently survived a nasty car crash and was marrying Arizona, the love of her life. Every single one of Callie’s friends was there to celebrate her big day. Weirdly, though, Addison was nowhere to be seen at the wedding.

7 Callie Never Appeared On Private Practice

Callie and Addison were good friends in Grey’s Anatomy. To think that their friendship all started when Callie found Addison crying in a toilet cubicle. The two surgeons remained close for almost two seasons until Addison decided to leave Seattle Grace and move to Los Angeles.

This move ultimately lead to the first Grey’s Anatomy spin off, of which Addison was the main character. During Private Practice’s run, there were multiple crossovers between the two shows. However, despite how close Addison and Callie were, Callie never once appeared on Addison’s show.

6 Callie Didn’t Tell Addison About Her Bisexuality

Coming out to your friends and family is one of the most difficult things to do. Even if you know that they will be fine with it and aren’t raging homophobes, you’re still identifying yourself as something other. That being said, friends are there to support you and love you no matter what.

Despite how difficult coming to terms with her sexuality was, Callie handled it remarkably well. She didn’t have it easy coming out to her family and this is where Addison could have helped. She knew what it was like to be ostracized from your parents and so she would have been able to partially relate.

5 Callie Became Best Friends With Mark Sloan

Addison, Mark Sloan and Derek all share a very complicated history. They all met when they were in medical school and it was then that Derek and Addison fell in love. Mark was their best friend, and he was even the best man at their wedding.

However, Derek and Addison’s marriage fell apart shortly after. In a moment of desperation, Addison slept with Mark, and Derek caught them in the act. While they were all able to reconcile, the fact that Callie became best friends with Mark despite what he had put Addison through speaks volumes about their friendship.

In Season 4, Callie went through a hell of a lot. After discovering that her husband had cheated on her with Izzie Stevens, she got a divorce and tried to move on. She befriended the new surgeon, Erica Hahn and slowly developed feelings for her, although she tried to deny them for most of the season.

When Addison came to visit the hospital, she and Callie had lunch together and caught up with their lives, During this catch up, Addison questioned Callie about her friendship with Dr Hahn, with Callie insisting they were just friends. Addison pushed further, clearly making her friend uncomfortable in the process.

3 Addison Only Visited Callie When Callie Was Dying

In Season 7 of Grey’s Anatomy, Callie and Arizona went through a lot. Firstly, they split up when Arizona went to Africa. During that time, a depressed Callie went to Mark for comfort and ended up pregnant. Then Arizona came back into Callie’s life and proposed to Callie, right before they ended up in a major car crash.

This collision left Callie and her unborn child fighting for their lives. While the other doctors took care of Callie, Addison was called in to help with the delivery of Callie’s baby. Unfortunately, that was the only time we ever saw Addison pay a visit specifically to see Callie.

2 Callie Had Mark’s Baby

In Season 3, audiences discovered that Addison had actually been pregnant with Mark’s baby after Derek had moved to Seattle. Not willing to have Mark’s child, Addison had an abortion. However, this turned out to be a bad decision, as when she wanted a child, Addison was told that she was practically infertile.

This was a big storyline for Addison that featured in both Grey’s Anatomy, and Private Practice, and was partly responsible for Addison leaving the hospital. However, as fate would have it, Callie ended up pregnant with Mark’s baby in an ironically cruel twist of fate for Addison.

1 Callie Was Good Friends With Meredith

When Addison first appeared, many fans disliked her, purely based on the fact that she was invented to put a strain on Meredith and Derek’s relationship. However, no one really stopped to consider things from Addison’s perspective.

Meredith was the woman who her husband had fallen in love with, immediately after splitting up with Addison. Everyone knew and loved Meredith, and yet Addison behaved with the utmost professionalism. So for Callie to hide Meredith’s panties that Addison pinned to a public board told Addison that Callie valued her friendship with Meredith over Addison.
