GTA 6s Location Where It Could Be (& Why Rockstar Makes Up Cities)

Rockstar Games has a lot of options when choosing the location of Grand Theft Auto 6, and they should branch out and try something new. Every Grand Theft Auto title so far has been set in fictional cities modeled after real-life American urban communities, and many believe GTA 6 will return to a familiar location like Vice City or San Andreas. However, a brand-new city inspired by a more obscure American metropolis would let the developers at Rockstar surprise fans and tell a brand new story.

The first Grand Theft Auto game introduced a trio of fictional, yet suspiciously familiar, crime-ridden cities players could explore and rampage through. Liberty City was modeled after New York, while Vice City, the setting of the titular Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, was based off of Miami, Florida. Both Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto V took place in San Andreas, an alternate version of the Los Angeles and its surrounding suburban and rural communities.

So far, most of the games in the Grand Theft Auto franchise have alternated between these three fictional cities. Some players suspect that Grand Theft Auto 6 will follow this pattern and return to Liberty City, the signature metropolis of the early Grand Theft Auto games, while other rumors hint at a return to Vice City. It is possible, though, that Rockstar Games will branch out from this pattern, creating a new metropolitan sandbox environment where they can tell a new story and introduce new mechanics. If they take this approach, the following real-life cities would be particularly great sources of inspiration for a GTA 6 setting.

GTA 6’s Setting Could Be Chicago, Las Vegas, Or New Orleans

GTA 6s Location Where It Could Be (& Why Rockstar Makes Up Cities)

A Grand Theft Auto 6 city inspired by Chicago would make for an interesting GTA setting, especially if they ignored the stereotype of 1930’s Chicago gangsters like Al Capone in favor of a more contemporary crime story. The grime and glory of the Second City could inspire a thoughtful GTA narrative about the tensions between traditional and modern crime. There could not only be stories about street gangs and crime syndicates, but also the graft, corruption, and patronage of machine politics and city government.

New Orleans, one of America’s more unique and colorful cities, has already used as a setting for games like Mafia III, Infamous 2, and Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. A Grand Theft Auto 6 sandbox environment partially modeled after New Orleans could have a novel urban layout more similar to European cities, along with thriving nightlife locations, Mardi-Gras style festivities, and criminal missions based on conning or stealing from regular influxes of tourists.

Grand Theft Auto Online is already famous for its Diamond Casino & Resort area, a popular fictional location where players can makes wagers, gamble away their earnings, and plan elaborate heists. A Grand Theft Auto 6 set in a city similar to Las Vegas wouldn’t be too far of a stretch, and Rockstar Games could flex their creative muscles by designing gaudy, over-the-top tourist landmarks along with beautifully stark desert ecosystems and canyons. They’ve already created such a fictional city in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ Las Venturas, but seeing a fully realized version similar to what Rockstar did with Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V could truly be something spectacular.

Why GTA’s Cities Are Made Up By Rockstar

There’s a reason Rockstar Games likes to use fictional cities for its Grand Theft Auto series, and it’s the same reason that DC superhero comic writers created fictional cities like Metropolis or Gotham. By creating off-brand versions of real life cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami, the developers of the Grand Theft Auto franchise have the best of both worlds. Rockstar Games can draw from the legacy and vibrancy of big American cities, particularly their histories of crime, while at the same time creating their own urban geography, neighborhoods, streets, and iconography, perfectly suited to tell their stories of gangsters, ambition, and retribution.

No one outside of Rockstar Games is sure where Grand Theft Auto 6 will be set, but the company definitely has a lot of choices. They should branch out and try to go somewhere new, or at least give players that hyper-stylized version of Vegas they only hinted at back in the PS2 era.
