Newly-emerged photos from the set of Disney’s Hocus Pocus 2 hint at a possible return to 1600s Salem in flashback scenes for the Disney+ bound sequel. Hocus Pocus has become a Halloween cult classic since premiering in 1993. Flaunting the talented trio Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, the spellbinding tale takes audiences on a whimsical ride. Set in the sleepy town of Salem, Massachusetts, the film follows teens as they attempt to stop the wicked Sanderson sisters from running amok on Halloween night after accidentally resurrecting them.

Despite the film’s lackluster box office performance upon release, Hocus Pocus has spawned a significant fandom in years since. Disney finally gave fans what they wanted in 2020 by confirming Hocus Pocus 2 was happening. All three of the original Sanderson sisters signed on to reprise their beloved roles. Anne Fletcher (Dumplin’) helms the picture, which is written by Jen D’Angelo (Workaholics). Though the plot is kept tightly under wraps, eagle eye onlookers have caught glimpses of the set build as production begins in Rhode Island.

Artist Luna Moon Gothic enchanted the world this week by sharing a closeup first look at the Hocus Pocus 2 set in Lincoln, Rhode Island. The carousel of images showcases full-scale facades of colonial homes seemingly arranged to be a 1600s town. Scroll through below to check out all of the photos:

One of the structures is a replica of Salem’s famous family home-turned museum: The Witch House. While it’s currently a tourist hotspot, The Witch House is said to be the only place with direct ties to the Salem Witch Trials. It was owned by Judge Jonathan Corwin, who sent 19 people to the gallows during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Award winning production designer Nelson Coates (Crazy Rich Asians) helmed the recreation of the house and other structures. Overall, the set images tease a return to 1600s Salem, possibly in flashback form. This would follow suit with the original film, which begins in Salem on October 31, 1693. That opening scene provides the only look into the Sanderson sisters’ lives before being executed.

It’s tough to imagine what flashbacks Hocus Pocus 2 could conjure up other than ones showing the origin of the Sanderson sisters. Seemingly sticking with the same recipe, the sequel follows three women who accidentally bring the Sandersons back to present-day Salem and must figure out how to stop them from wreaking havoc. Perhaps the only way they can stop them is by magically transporting back to 1600s Salem to find out what made the trio so hangry about children in the first place. Hopefully, they don’t stick around there too long, though. The real magic is seeing the Sandersons in modern-day Salem.
