One dataminer has discovered that Grand Theft Auto Online’s newest update has made numerous audio and sound changes to Grand Theft Auto V; possibly preparing the title for its next-gen Expanded & Enhanced release in 2022. GTA Online’s newest content expansion The Contract released yesterday and is considered one of the biggest post-launch updates players have seen from Rockstar Games so far. The new update features the return of GTA V’s Franklin Clinton, Chop the Dog, and Lamar and includes new exclusive music from Dr. Dre, a new radio station, weapons, quality of life updates, as well as new missions to give insight into the returning characters.

Grand Theft Auto V is almost a decade old but arguably continues to be Rockstar’s biggest and most popular title to date. Though its base game and story haven’t been improved upon or overhauled since its last-gen rerelease, the title’s online sandbox mode has received major expansions since 2015 that add new content, features and expands the title’s lore. Due to its massive player base and continued financial success, Grand Theft Auto V is set to rerelease for a second time on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S early next year. Next-gen players will be able to experience the Enhanced Edition of the title with improved visuals and gameplay, shorter loading times and many new features yet to be announced that will keep the current-gen remaster distinctive from previous versions.

With the prominent release of Grand Theft Auto 5’s Enhanced Edition, it looks like Rockstar Games might be making preparations. Posted on Twitter, dataminer Monkeypolice188 has unearthed new information pertaining to the new update that reveals numerous audio changes made to the base game, something the developer hasn’t normally done before. This includes Franklin sounds, mission passed themes, a new type of loading screen music, and much more shared by the dataminer. While most of the changes have been made, it seems that some of the data isn’t present in the game’s latest build but can be found in its files, appearing as if they are being prepared for the upcoming Enhanced Edition.

(2/7) – franklin sounds, including stuff that afaik isn’t even in this update, some of his mission passed themes, franklin himself (movement/coughing/breathing etc) – chop sounds, specifically some of the panting data.

(4/7) – various bits of HUD including phone sounds, radio signal/beeps, menu nav and such – parachute sounds, specifically wind/feedback/deploy stuff – radio station functionality (new audio type for a full list of all radio stations, not sure how this impacts gameplay)

(6/7) – some new “track” sounds for tanks (not used, again, no actual sounds for this data) – plane engine sound data changes and additions various weapon sound changes: – minigun loop sound – railgun recharge/hum – shotgun reload -desert eagle clip – lmg and sniper reload/clip

The Contract expansion is definitely audio-heavy influenced when it comes to additions. The inclusion of Dr. Dre in Grand Theft Auto Online has introduced the title to several brand-new songs, additions to existing in-game radio stations, and an entirely new station hosted by Spanish singer and songwriter ROSALIA alongside Venezuela musician Arca. Players can also take on music-focused missions and work on growing business ventures with the music agency.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Expanded & Enhanced Edition is only a few months away, so The Contract update might be the final rendition of Rockstar’s post-content in 2021. It’s unknown whether the audio changes were leftover or if Rockstar is effectively preparing for the upcoming rerelease. Players can however look forward to hearing more in 2022, as the Enhanced Edition’s release is only a few months away.
