Enterprising Grand Theft Auto 5: Online players have found a way to earn rewards while AFK, by making their in-game character walk in circles. The game recently received another major update based on the theme of car culture, titled Los Santos Car Tuners, with more players joining the game than any previous update.

As GTA Online’s biggest update of the year since the Cayo Perico Heist was released in December 2020, this content drop provides fans with a plethora of new cars and features, including the introduction of the LS Car Meet. The Car Meet acts as a social hub where car lovers can gather to show off their prized vehicles, players can also watch others modify their cars, and test drive cars on new test tracks. In addition to these new features, quality of life improvements were provided and the option for players to purchase and own their very own Auto Shop.

Twitter user Dirty_Worka posted a video of their rather eerie find at the LS Car Meet. Fittingly set to the tune of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers, Dirty_Worka’s short clip showed a number of players mindlessly walking around in a circle at the newly released car meet that came with the Los Santos Tuners update. There is a reason behind the odd behavior though, as players are able to gain a small amount of Tuner XP and earn rewards while being AFK by making their character walk around in circles. This action actually tricks the game into believing they are still active, thereby earning them the small experience bonus that is awarded every few minutes. The way the exploit is achieved differs depending on the player’s platform; controller users have used a simple rubber band to tie their analog sticks together, while other players on PC have found that putting a small weight on their keyboard’s ‘W’ key does the trick.

Fans were quick to point out to Dirty_Worka that this new method of mindlessly walking isn’t a particularly fast way to earn Tuner XP, with those who have tried it earning only a few Tuner Rep levels after leaving their character walking overnight. Others added that the new races introduced with the Los Santos Tuners update can earn players XP much faster, and will not destroy a player’s control sticks in the process.

For GTA Online players that don’t want to be there to play the game, while still reaping the benefits, this new method of earning XP, although slow, certainly does the trick. It’s understandable that some players with less time on their hands may find it to be a simple solution to unlock rewards that they usually don’t have the time to earn, considering there are 1000 Tuner Rep levels. Should Rockstar want to remove this exploit, it may be difficult to address players simply AFK walking without removing the bonus XP altogether.
