Why Rise of Skywalkers Jedi Voices Scene Doesnt Include Rebels Ezra

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker featured the voices of past Jedi coming to aid Rey in her fight against Palpatine, but there was one voice missing: that of Star Wars Rebels’ Ezra. The Star Wars universe has been in constant expansion not only on the big screen but in other media as well, with TV shows and books that have added to the stories of the main characters. The Star Wars universe began in 1977 with the movie now known as Star Wars: A New Hope, which along with the sequels Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, forms the “original trilogy”.

Years later, George Lucas took viewers a few years back in the Star Wars timeline to explore the backstory of Darth Vader in a prequel trilogy, released between 1999 and 2005. After that, the franchise focused on other media, particularly TV, with the animated series The Clone Wars, set between Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Following the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney, the studio began to develop a new trilogy with the purpose of closing the Skywalker saga, and it also brought a new animated series titled Star Wars Rebels, which falls into Star Wars canon. The series introduced Ezra Bridger (voiced by Taylor Gray), who was surprisingly absent from a big moment in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Ezra Bridger was a young, Force-sensitive human whose parents were imprisoned by Imperial forces. At the beginning of Star Wars Rebels, his mission was to find his parents, but everything changed after Kanan Jarrus took him in as his apprentice. Ezra was formally inducted into the Jedi Order when Yoda’s voice helped him find the kyber crystal to create his first lightsaber. Ezra’s fate was left ambiguous when he stayed in the Chimaera as it was about to be dragged into hyperspace to make sure Thrawn was defeated for good. Now, in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, after Rey and Kylo Ren were attacked by Palpatine in Exegol, Rey heard the voices of past Jedi who were motivating her to continue fighting. Among those were the voices of Luke and Anakin Skywalker, Yoda, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, but also those of Ahsoka Tano and Ezra’s master Kanan Jarrus, making fans wonder why Ezra’s voice wasn’t included.

Although it’s currently unknown where Ezra is, it has been confirmed by Star Wars Rebels’ executive producer Dave Filoni that Ezra (and Thrawn) survived that unconventional hyperspace jump, but what happened after that remains a mystery. Ezra not being included as one of the voices of past Jedi, then, further confirms that he’s alive, as only those who have passed were able to return and offer some motivation to Rey. Another possibility, albeit a somewhat thin one, is that Ezra ultimately joined the dark side after Star Wars Rebels, which was one of Kanan’s fears at some point, as Darth Maul showed interest in having him as an apprentice and he struggled with his dark side for a while. Joining the dark side wouldn’t have allowed him to return as a Jedi voice, unless he redeemed himself before he died, as Anakin Skywalker did in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

It’s unknown if and when Star Wars will address Ezra’s fate, though there have been rumors of Disney casting a live-action Ezra for a post-Rebels series, as part of its many Star Wars projects for Disney+. For now, the two possible answers to why Ezra wasn’t one of the voices of past Jedi in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are because he’s alive or he turned to the dark side, but either way, fans deserve to know what happened to him.
