The newly announced Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR port for Oculus Quest 2 is being developed by Video Games Deluxe, the same studio behind Rockstar Games’ LA Noire: The VR Case Files. Initially announced at Facebook Connect 2021, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled an exclusive new first-person VR version of GTA: San Andreas coming to the Meta Quest 2, with no release date or other platforms mentioned. While the cult classic game have been ported to numerous different platforms previously, this version will marks Grand Theft Auto’s first leap to VR and Rockstar’s second venture into virtual reality gaming.

Information on the newly announced VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains scant, with no footage shown of its visuals or details about its gameplay shared yet. Since the original GT: San Andreas is almost two decades old, the Quest 2 version is expected to feature quality-of-life improvements like full 360-degree movement controls and enhanced visuals to boost first-person immersion. Similarly, Rockstar also confirmed the title is also being revamped on new platforms as part of the GTA: The Trilogy remaster collection, which is releasing next week. GTA: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition will feature new graphical and gameplay improvements and could possibly be used as the foundation of the VR version.

Following Facebook Connect 2021, a LinkedIn job listing and announcement by Video Games Deluxe revealed that the LA Noire: The VR Case Files studio is developing the newly-announced Oculus Quest 2 VR port of GTA: San Andreas. The post states that company is “beavering away on one of the world’s best loved games for VR” and is recruiting for San Andreas and other unnamed projects. No information regarding the game itself was provided in the post, however. The studio signs off by mentioning those who interested in working on the classic game can open a dialogue with the company via email.

Last year, Video Games Deluxe made a similar announcement on LinkedIn, revealing the studio would be developing a AAA open-world VR game for Rockstar, labeling it as a groundbreaking project for which it was steadily recruiting. This picked up traction on social media, as speculations and rumors believed that Rockstar’s open-world VR game could be Grand Theft Auto 5 because of its existing first-person mode, ongoing success, and upcoming re-releases for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

GTA: San Andreas is officially coming to VR instead, making it the GTA series’ first virtual reality entry and once more allowing the title to be accessible in a new way. While it’s unknown if the VR version will come to platforms beyond Quest 2, or if it will be drastically shortened like LA Noire: The VR Case Files was, players can expect a brand-new experience reliving the beloved games in first-person sometime in 2022.
