GTA Trilogy Purchasers Demand Refunds Following Buggy Release

Following the game’s lackluster release, many gamers are now demanding refunds for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The recently-released compilation, which collects Rockstar Games’ classic open-world crime titles, includes 2001’s GTA III, 2002’s Vice City, and 2004’s San Andreas. While the old-school collection was only just released on November 11, negative fan impressions of GTA: The Trilogy have already become very apparent.

GTA: The Trilogy remasters GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas by improving each games’ graphics and modernizing their control schemes. Given the massive popularity of these games, and gamers’ nostalgic memories of them, the compilation sounds like a sure hit. However, an abundance of criticism has been leveled against Rockstar Games’ definitive editions, largely due to the fact that the new versions are actually based on the titles’ wildly disliked mobile platform ports. The collection’s supposedly modernized graphics have been mocked, with many gamers feeling that the updated releases look worse than the original graphics from the early 2000s. A particularly messy launch on PC, which made the game practically unplayable, has led to Rockstar Games pulling GTA: The Trilogy from sale on PC until its various issues can be resolved.

Following the remastered trilogy’s disastrous launch, Nintendo Life reports that gamers are coming out in droves to demand refunds for GTA: The Trilogy. Many of the requests are coming from those who purchased the essentially worthless PC version of the title before Rockstar Games removed it from sale. However, apparently many console players are also asking for their money back due to the generally poor quality of the remastered collection. Rockstar Games has responded to at least one refund request, but port studio Grove Street Games insists that the trilogy’s various issues will be fixed.

While GTA: The Trilogy was reportedly removed from sale on PC due to gamebreaking technical issues, there was also another reason for the pull. Rockstar recently confirmed a theory that the remaster was removed because a variety of files had been unintentionally left in the final version of the game. Many of these leftover files are songs that were removed from the new releases due to licensing issues. While the songs will not play in-game, their files are easily accessible, allowing players to edit the files and bring the licensed music back without much issue.

For a wildly anticipated release, GTA: The Trilogy has managed to disappoint a large percentage of its players. The three classic GTA installments are considered classics, and a large part of Rockstar Games’ success is attributed to the acclaim of those innovative open-world adventures. This no doubt makes players even more frustrated with the poor quality of GTA: The Trilogy, and refunds are an optimal way to express that frustration. While Grove Street Games promises to improve the experience through patches, gamers may be unwilling to give the remastered collection another chance.
