The follow up to Marvel’s surprise smash hit of 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is currently in production and fans can’t wait to see what director James Gunn has in store. The film follows the heroes (and a villain or two) from the first film, plus a few new faces – including Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) dad. We’ve already heard that Vin Diesel, who stars as Groot, was “blown away” by his first look at the footage, and Gunn has been more than happy to talk about what we’ll be seeing, including Kurt Russell as Ego, and releasing monster battle concept art.

The director is a prolific user of social media, and is sure to post plenty more about the return of the Guardians over the next few months. Today, Gunn treated us to a sneak peek of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 script, revealing that there is a special edition created that only he and one specific actor gets to see.

The tweet shows us the front page of Gunn’s copy of the script, with the title of the movie front and center. Under that, however, we see a second line that reads “Groot Version: Gunn/Diesel.” The director captioned the tweet: “The special Groot version of #GotGVol2 that only Vin Diesel & I have, where every Groot line is printed in English.”

Fans of the film know that Groot, an enormous, sentient, tree-being, is a tree of few words. In the entire first film, Groot said only five words: his standard phrase, “I am Groot,” and the emotional line “We are Groot.” Despite the limited vocabulary, Diesel was able to convey a lot of emotion with his ‘groot’s, and it seems that now we know why. Gunn’s tweet reveals that Diesel actually knows exactly what Groot is trying to say in every scene, and that he is using full dialogue rather than just general direction on the gist of what Groot is trying to convey.

While this shows an impressive level of commitment to detail on Gunn’s part, the best bit is the exclusivity of the script — only Diesel and Gunn himself get to read it. This leaves the rest of the cast to react only to Diesel’s voice acting, without knowing what he is actually saying. (Their scripts presumably read only “I am Groot” for his lines, so that they know when he will be speaking.) This says so much about the talent of the cast, and about how well they play off each other. Watching the films, it appears as though they understand exactly what Groot is saying throughout.

Of course, this doesn’t tell us anything more about the sequel itself in terms of plot or characters. We already knew that Diesel would be returning as the voice of Groot, and because the tweet only shows the front page of the script, nothing more can be gleaned from the photo. However, it’s a little something that shows how much care Gunn puts into his writing, and how talented the cast truly is. It’s also a lot of fun to imagine the frustration and hilarity that could ensue as the cast initially attempts to understand Groot-speak on set!
