There are many characters in Harry Potter and fans don’t always love all of them. But which of them deserve to be hated and which really do?

In the Harry Potter series, there are hundreds of characters mentioned over the course of the seven books. While some of these characters, whether they are central or supporting, are well-loved by most fans, others are overall hated.

While some of the characters that are hated deserve that hate, there are also many that do not. Here are some of the most hated characters from the Harry Potter series breaking them down by which characters deserve the hate and which do not.

10 Don’t Deserve: Cho Chang

Cho Chang is one of the supporting characters that isn’t well-liked by fans and that most characters in the book don’t seem to like that much either. This is really unfortunate because she never did anything that bad.

It seemed like most fans liked her until she ended up not being a great romantic match for Harry. Much of the hate directed towards her just seems to come from her being a love interest rather than because she is a bad character.

9 Do Deserve: Percy Weasley

Most of the members of the Weasley family are well-liked, and they are definitely the more endearing family unit of the series. However, this doesn’t mean that all members of the family are loved equally.

Of all of the children, Percy is the least liked both by others around him and by fans. However, most of this hate is deserved because he abandons his family and chooses to go along with the ministry even as they are clearly lying and doing some awful things. His love of success clouds his morality.

8 Don’t Deserve: Ron Weasley

Other than Percy, Ron might be the main Weasley family member who gets criticized. However, given that Ron is such a central character, the hate is a little more complex.

Many people do love Ron, but he’s also the main member of the trio who gets criticized. While he does deserve some of the criticism, he’s also not any more flawed than Harry and Hermione, he just has different flaws than they do. He does make mistakes, but he also does a lot of heroic things.

7 Do Deserve: Severus Snape

Severus Snape started out as a character that basically everyone hated, but, after the truth about him was revealed, many fans grew to like him. However, for the people who still hate him, this hate is definitely deserved.

While he might have tried to help Harry in the end and been working with Dumbledore for years, he was still a cruel person at heart. He wasn’t a good person, and his reasons for switching to the good side weren’t altruistic but were in fact kind of messed up.

6 Don’t Deserve: Lavender Brown

Lavender Brown is another character who gets more hate than she deserves. While she’s definitely not likable, she’s not as awful as people want to think. She can be annoying and rude to others at times, but she’s also young and immature like most other Hogwarts students.

Ron was probably even worse to her when they were dating then she was to him, and she’s another female character who just received hate because they are written to only be love interests.

5 Do Deserve: Rita Skeeter

Rita Skeeter is one of the characters who isn’t exactly a villain but is antagonistic. While she might not be evil like a Death Eater is, she also doesn’t care about people and is happy to destroy their lives. It’s no wonder that all the other characters can’t stand her and that fans of the series couldn’t either.

She definitely deserves the hate because she was actively trying to hurt others. While maybe Hermione shouldn’t have kept her in a jar, she did need to be stopped and held accountable.

4 Don’t Deserve: Ginny Weasley

Ginny Weasley isn’t the most hated character by any means, but she isn’t well-loved in the same way that characters like Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood, and the trio are. While many fans enjoy her, those who don’t think she should have been with Harry aren’t as big of fans.

Ginny could have been an even more loved character if she had been given more story arcs because she actually had a great personality.

3 Do Deserve: The Dursleys

The Death Eaters and Voldemort are obviously hated, but seeing as they are the obvious villains of the story, they weren’t included on this list. However, the Dursleys are also villains in their own right.

They are cruel people who don’t really care about others, and they neglect and abuse their own nephew for years. The way they treat Harry makes all the hate directed towards them totally valid. They are also extremely judgemental people who think they are better than others.

2 Don’t Deserve: Fleur Delacour

Fleur Delacour was the least liked of all of the Triwizard Tournament champions, and this is kind of a shame. Seeing as she was the only girl of the group to be picked, it’s sad that she was written to be the least likable of the four.

However, despite many people around her not liking her, and many fans assuming the worst, she turned out to be more complex than originally thought. She was a devoted person and a talented witch who was a great partner to Bill Weasley and a committed member of the Order of the Phoenix.

1 Do Deserve: Dolores Umbridge

Dolores Umbridge is probably the most hated character in the entire Harry Potter series other than Voldemort. While she might not ever technically become a Death Eater, she supports Voldemort’s regime and ideology as a member of the Ministry, so she is just as bad.

She is one of the craziest and most sadistic characters in the book, so all the hate that she gets is totally deserved. She’s an example of that truth that evil and cruelty can come in many different forms and that even people who seem harmless can be dangerous and mean.
