James Gunn, the writer and director of Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has shared his top three favorite Spider-Man films. Gunn is no stranger to the world of comic book films, having tackled several himself with Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel. In addition to the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn is working on a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which is eyeing a December 2022 release. He also previously served as an executive producer on both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Gunn has even recently ventured out from Marvel to write and direct The Suicide Squad, featuring a team of DC comics villains. The Suicide Squad’s Peacemaker, played by John Cena, is also getting a TV series spin-off, which Gunn is writing and directing.

Outside the realms of Marvel and DC, Gunn produced a 2019 film written by his cousins called Brightburn, which asks the question, what if a Superman-like child was evil? Even before Gunn joined up with Marvel, he wrote and directed a subversive superhero film called Super, which featured a man without powers who learned how to be a hero from reading comic books featuring Marvel and DC characters. While Gunn has not been a direct part of any Spider-Man film, he’s a dedicated fan of the material who has been instrumental in crafting the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In response to a tweet from entertainment journalist Matt Ramos’ ranking of Spider-Man films, Gunn tweeted his own top three picks. Gunn gave the top spot to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with Spider-Man 2 coming in second and Spider-Man: Homecoming taking third. While that still leaves five Spider-Man films unranked by Gunn, his selections are an eclectic mix of the Spider-Man movies that have been produced. Check out Gunn’s tweet below:

Gunn is not alone in ranking Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse high on the list, as it is one of the best-reviewed films to feature the character. Into the Spider-Verse also won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, and a sequel is on the way. Gunn’s second choice, Spider-Man 2, was directed by Sam Raimi with Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. Spider-Man 2 also has stellar reviews, with most considering it the best of Raimi’s trilogy of films. Gunn’s third-place spot went to Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first solo outing of the MCU’s current Peter Parker, Tom Holland. In keeping with all Gunn’s previous picks, Spider-Man: Homecoming was well-reviewed, and it even featured Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark helping to usher Spider-Man into the larger universe of films.

Gunn didn’t mention either of Andrew Garfield’s outings in The Amazing Spider-Man films, though those movies were not as well-received, having been scrapped after only two movies. However, with Garfield’s exit, Holland was brought in, giving audiences the ongoing franchise of films. The third installment of Holland’s franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is set to ignite the box office in December with audiences eager to see what the film has been keeping under wraps, possibly even giving Gunn a new contender for his favorite Spider-Man movie.
