Writer/director James Gunn debunks a Guardians of the Galaxy casting rumor stating David Tennant was considered for the role of Rocket Raccoon. On top of being a hit with audiences and critics alike, Gunn’s first Guardians film introduced its titular group of misfits to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014. Thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and their roles in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, the Guardians have become some of the universe’s most beloved characters. Gunn’s third and final installment in the franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is currently scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
Before the films and Baby Groot plush toys flew off the shelves, the Guardians of the Galaxy were a relatively unknown superhero team by the general public—which made the first film a gamble for Marvel Studios. Propelled by Gunn’s script, style, and commendable taste in music, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora, Dave Bautista’s Drax, Vin Diesel’s Groot, and Bradley Cooper’s Rocket provided the much-needed chemistry to make the original film a hit. In the years since many have imagined what others may have looked like in those roles.
Gunn, who is very active on social media, recently responded to a tweet claiming that Adam Sandler was once in the running for the voice role of Rocket. After debunking that claim, another fan asked if Tennant had ever been considered for the role—something that was reported by various outlets years ago. Again, Gunn said this was never the case. Check it out below:
Nope. Never even came up. https://t.co/zJxWt9IfSr
Both of the aforementioned pieces of casting trivia have circulated for quite some time and it’s unclear how these sorts of things get started. In some cases, stars get attached to projects to help generate the buzz that will help them through the pre-production stage. To be fair, it’s not hard to imagine the illustrious and versatile Tennant (Doctor Who, Good Omens, Broadchurch)—who is arguably the most underrated actor in the industry— pulling off an adequate version of Rocket. However, Cooper now owns the role. Outside of his inimitable voicing acting, Rocket (and Karen Gillan’s Nebula) has exhibited some of the best character growth in the MCU.
In his time without his fellow Guardians, Rocket grew into a key Avenger who helped save the universe. Now that his shipmates are back, Cooper’s next vocal performances as Rocket will come in Thor: Love and Thunder, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and then, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3—which started shooting last month and is expected to wrap up his story in a big way. What happens to the Guardians of the Galaxy after that is anyone’s guess.
