Cosmo the Spacedog in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has an admirer, evidenced by video of an adorable pug bouncing with excitement whenever the character appears on-screen. GOTG’s Cosmo the Spacedog quickly stole the internet’s heart during the pre-release period, courtesy of trailers and screenshots that showcased him several times over. Since developer Eidos-MontrĂ©al and publisher Square Enix launched the title late last month, Cosmo’s popularity has grown tenfold.

The beloved Spacedog made his comic book debut during the Nova run from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning in the 2000s. Cosmo’s origin story revolved around the Soviet Space Program, depicting him as a test animal who obtained telepathic abilities after being launched into space and enduring prolonged exposure to cosmic radiation. He’s since made his way into cross-media projects, too, appearing in both of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the Disney+ What if…? animated series. And players aren’t the only ones obsessing over Cosmo’s GOTG game casting.

Yesterday, November 10, Annette Gonzalez, the Strategic Partner Manager at Microsoft, took to Twitter to share footage of her pug excitedly jumping up and down when Cosmo appeared in the Guardians of the Galaxy game. In a scene where the Guardians watch Cosmo chase after a ball, Gonzalez’ pug barks with glee. It’s all very adorable, especially since it seems Cosmo the Spacedog has a new #1 fan. As Gonzalez notes in her tweet, this certainly makes Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy a contender for Game of the Year. Many players probably have it on their lists already, but is anything better than a seal of approval from an overly excited canine? Not likely.

After years of rumors and speculation, Square Enix unveiled the GOTG game this summer during E3 2021. A lengthy gameplay demonstration accompanied the reveal, alongside a surprise October 2021 due date. Developer Eidos-MontrĂ©al managed to adhere to the originally promised launch date, too, delivering an experience that continues to surprise early adopters. By most accounts, the gameplay takes some getting used to but comes into its own as adventure progresses. The story and characters warrant applause as well, thanks to a level of charm that sometimes rivals the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians films.
