Halloween Kills had a successful opening weekend both at the box office and on streaming, with over 1 million households watching the movie over its first three days. With Halloween just over a week away, Universal rolled out the latest installment of the iconic horror franchise of the same name this past weekend. Halloween Kills picks up right where the 2018 reboot left off, with Michael Myers once again evading death and setting out on another murder spree across Haddonfield. Led by franchise star Jamie Lee Curtis, the cast also includes Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Kyle Richards, and Anthony Michael Hall.
Halloween Kills arrived on the heels of mixed reviews and as a pandemic continues to hinder the public’s willingness to return to movie theaters. It could’ve easily disappointed in its debut, but it proved to be the success story of the weekend instead. With an opening gross of $50 million, Halloween Kills scored the best debut for a horror movie this year and managed to do so while even being available at home on Peacock.
At the same time, the movie was no slouch on streaming either. According to Samba TV, 1.2 million households in the United States watched Halloween Kills on streaming this past weekend. Saturday was its most popular day, and the overall audience skewed slightly (+5%) female. The movie is available for no additional charge.

This has to be a major win for Peacock, a streaming service still looking to break out in a major way. Though Universal hasn’t released their own numbers for Halloween Kills, Samba TV is a trusted source when it comes to streaming data. While the majority of audiences turned towards theaters for maximum scares with Halloween Kills, streaming was an option for those who didn’t want to venture out, and in this instance, it seems to have only added to the movie’s overall success. In some cases, it’s looked like dual streaming releases can impact box office numbers (Ex.: The Suicide Squad, Space Jam: A New Legacy), but with Halloween Kills, it has managed to have the best of both worlds so far.
Of course, the second weekend box office could show a sizable drop, especially since the movie will face competition from sci-fi epic Dune (which will also be available on streaming via HBO Max). Still, since the titular holiday is getting closer, Halloween Kills can continue to draw in audiences both in theaters and on Peacock. These results bode well for next year’s Halloween Ends, which just might bring the series to a close. There’s clearly still an interest in the Michael Myers saga, so even though some franchises gradually decline when it comes to viewership, this one just might pull through in the end.
