Halloween Movie Producer Still Wants A TV Series Spinoff

Malek Akkad, producer on David Gordon Green’s Halloween, has said that he still wants to bring a TV series spinoff of the iconic horror franchise to life. Akkad’s production company, Trancas International Films, has been developing a television series off of Halloween for some years now, but they’ve never found a way for the project to move forward.

Akkad has been involved with the Halloween series since 1995, when he was associate producer on Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. He also produced Halloween H20, 2007’s Halloween, and Halloween II. Thanks to his history with the franchise, it’s only natural that he would also produce Green’s Halloween, the latest part of the series to be released in October. The film appears as though it might just be the best Halloween movie that Akkad has ever produced. Green’s film saw its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, where it garnered some serious critical buzz. Even John Carpenter himself has said that Green’s film is the best installment of the Halloween franchise since his original film back in 1978.

When Bloody Disgusting asked Akkad if plans were still ongoing for a television spinoff of Halloween, the producer confirmed that it is still very much being considered. “You know, it’s something that we’ve had for a long time and I definitely want to see it done,” Akkad said, adding that the nature of modern-day television has changed the way he and his team have approached plans for a spinoff. “When we started doing it… this was in development about a decade ago. At the time, I think the thought was we don’t want to cannibalize the theatrical. Let’s keep it as a theatrical event movie. If that starts flowing down, we would address TV. Nowadays, we all know, TV is pulling out ahead of theatrical in a way that surprised everybody, certainly me.”

As for whether or not Michael Myers would be in the series, Akkad confirmed that it was a possibility but was still coy about the idea. “The one we were developing and that I still feel very strongly about, he’s involved in it,” he revealed. “That’s really all I can say about it now. It wouldn’t look anything like your traditional Halloween movie, but he’s in there as are a lot of other characters but used in different and interesting ways. I wish I could talk more about it but it’s something we’re looking at very closely.”

While the television spinoff certainly has not been confirmed, it is notable that Akkad is keeping most details under wraps. His language suggests that a TV series may be a very serious possibility in the near future. Producer Jason Blum has said that he aims to make a sequel film if this year’s Halloween does well, so further expanding the series off of Green’s film is an idea that is already being considered. Plus, it’s worth noting that Blumhouse decided to expand The Purge franchise this very season with a 10-episode limited series that takes place a decade after the events of this year’s film, The First Purge. So, there’s already a precedent for the studio to produce a TV show spinoff. This only further paves the way for a possible spinoff featuring the infamous Michael Myers. If a television series does wind up happening, it will open up an entirely new direction for the Halloween franchise that few expected, but, if done well, many will love.
