Halo 5: Guardians was one of the most highly anticipated games for the Xbox One when it was released last week. Previews of the game were favorable, and fans seemed more than ready to step into the Halo universe once again. Now, news comes that Guardians has broken not just one record but two. It is the fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive to date, and also had the biggest launch of any game to date in the Halo franchise.
Guardians earned over $400 million globally in its first week of sales, pushing the Halo franchise total to over $5 billion in the process. It’s also been the most-played Xbox One title for the past week, with over 21 million hours of gameplay already being logged by fans around the world including 12 million hours of campaign gameplay. Even video of the game is popular, with Halo 5: Live earning a record from Guinness World Records for the most-watched game launch broadcast in history; over 330,000 unique streams of the event were watched on release day, and 5.5 million total views of launch content were recorded in the week since. To top it all off, Guardians also nabbed the distinction of being the best-selling digital game of all time during a release week in the Xbox Store.
Part of the reason for this was the positive reception to Halo 4, which was also developed by 343 Industries. Hype for the game began in 2013 when a trailer was released at E3, before Halo 5 even had an official title. The inclusion of access to a Guardians beta with purchase of Halo: The Master Chief Collection also helped to build anticipation for the game. While some fans were disappointed to see the series leave the Xbox 360 behind and weren’t happy with the lack of an offline mode, Microsoft clearly won over fans before launch.
One thing to keep in mind is that the “$400 million” figure that Microsoft revealed is attributed to both games and hardware, meaning that the Halo 5 signature edition Xbox One (and it’s $499 price tag) is likely helping to inflate the figure a bit. It’s still a pretty worthy achievement, however, especially when you consider that there are many games that don’t net $400 million in lifetime sales. Even the original Halo: Combat Evolved fell a little short of that mark (not counting the Anniversary Edition remake.)
There will always be those who prefer a previous installment of a franchise to a new one, but Halo 5 seems to be earning its acclaim. Fans are loving it so far, and if the trend continues then it could very well become the best-selling game in the series. At least until the inevitable Halo 6 is released, anyway.
