Fans of Halo Infinite are busy defeating the Banished now that the campaign is out, playing as Master Chief as he teams up with UNSC marines dotted across Zeta, who may all be better than real teammates in multiplayer. Infinite is the sixth main entry into the Halo series and is the third title developed by 343 Industries. The campaign launched on December 8 and continues the story of The Master Chief as he battles the Banished across Zeta Halo to save humanity once again.

343 released Halo Infinite’s multiplayer as a separate download and let fans play it a month early as a part of Xbox’s 20th-anniversary celebrations in November. Despite the frustration around its monetization, Infinite’s multiplayer has been well received by new and old players alike. The mode features 4v4 ranked and quickplay playlists, a 12v12 big team battle mode, and game types include fan-favorites Capture the Flag and Slayer.

If players want to be successful in the campaign or multiplayer, good coordination with their squad is important, and the campaign NPCs are usually better at it than multiplayer teammates. Across the campaign world, players are able to capture Foward Operating Bases (FOBs). Once these are captured, friendly UNSC marines will appear when Master Chief travels to them. These Marines will follow Chief throughout Halo Infinite’s campaign missions and help take down any Banished they encounter along the way. These Marines have different variations and carry different weapons, and more types of marines can be unlocked as the player earns Valor from completing missions. When the player builds up a good selection of troops, they can often be much more efficient at achieving objectives than they otherwise would be coordinating with real people in multiplayer.

One of the more frustrating parts of a Halo multiplayer experience can be trying to use the vehicles effectively. Most players would like to use the gun or rocket turret of a Warthog and be driven around the map without it flipping over, but that rarely happens. If they decide to drive it themselves and hope someone else can use the turret properly, a lot of the time players just ignore the empty seats and run right past. The campaign NPCs in Infinite, however, are the best Warthog passengers a spartan could hope for.

If a player fast travels to a FOB in Halo Infinite, friendly NPCs will spawn around the area. When the player calls in a Warthog or Razorback and gets in the driver’s seat, any friendly NPC nearby will jump in it, no questions asked. Warthogs can have one passenger and one person manning the turret, and NPCs on the turret do not miss. Razorbacks are variations of a Warthog with no turret, so can fit up to five friendly NPCs in them. It is really fun getting a squad of five marines in a Razorback and driving to a Banished stronghold together to take it down.

A lot of the time in Halo Infinite’s multiplayer, getting the power weapons can be the difference between winning and losing. However, in a lot of cases, friendly teammates don’t go for them or are unable to make the most of them. One player might be a better sniper than another, but trying to ask a teammate to give up one of the coolest weapons in the game might take a lot of persuading and isn’t really practical while fighting the opposition. The same applies in Infinite’s campaign mode, as sniper rifles and rocket launchers can be very useful in taking down the stronger Brutes and Elites that are scattered around the map. With Halo Infinite not having co-op in its campaign, players could find themselves short of support when taking on The Banished.

Fortunately, the NPCs in Infinite will hand over any weapon they are holding without needing a confrontation. NPCs will pick up any weapon nearby that is stronger than what they have, and different variants of marines will spawn with a specific weapon. Another thing players can do is grab different weapons from the selection crates at an FOB, give each marine a different weapon, and then load all of them into a Razorback and head out to the next mission. Then, when they run out of ammo, they get their pick of whatever weapon they need next. Having this variety available at any time can create some great weapon combinations in Halo Infinite, which can be very powerful when trying to take down a Banished stronghold.

NPC Dialogue Makes Halo Infinite Feel Less Lonely

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is a fun time, but it can be quite lonely if playing alone. There is very little mic-chatter in the games, much less than there used to be during the Halo 3 glory days on Xbox 360, and the AI can grow tiresome quickly if it is the only thing a player is hearing for hours. In ranked mode communication is even more important, and while there is more in-game chat than in the quick play, players are still better queuing with three friends instead of hoping for three random players with their mics on.

The campaign of Halo Infinite could have had a similar issue, with such a large map and only the Weapon AI as Master Chief’s constant companion. The Weapon does give funny information, such as saying Halo’s Covenant smells bad, but they don’t talk constantly. Fortunately, both friendly and enemy NPCs stop the gameplay from becoming silent and lonely. Friendly NPCs will salute and greet Master Chief when approached and thank him for saving them. They will also call out enemy locations and talk to each other during fights. Enemy NPCs talk to each other as well, with Brutes and Elites yelling at grunts for their lack of power or cursing Master Chief for ruining their plans. The NPC dialogue really helps Halo Infinite feel alive, and the friendly NPC chatter is much better than the radio silence players will often experience when playing multiplayer.

Halo Infinite’s reviews have been positive, and the sophistication of its AI is one of the reasons the campaign plays so well. With such a large map, the NPCs help to make the solo experience less isolated, and their willingness to instantly help with anything Master Chief does actually makes them better teammates than most real-life players. With such a good AI system, it could open a possibility for Infinite to have a fun Escape From Tarkov-style game mode instead of the currently rumored battle royale. Whether or not 343 does add a new game mode, Halo Infinite is likely to finish as one of the best game releases of 2021.
