How The MCU Already Secretly Set Up Blade’s Eternals Cameo

Mahershala Ali’s cameo in Eternals came as a surprise ahead of Blade, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been subtly setting it up for years. First announced at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con, Blade will star Mahershala Ali as the titular half-human and half-vampire daywalker. Director Bassam Tariq will helm the upcoming film, which gets a script from HBO’s Watchmen writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour. Despite delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production on the forthcoming MCU film should begin in July 2022.

An Eternals post-credits scene gave Marvel fans their first taste of Blade. In the scene, Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman, the Eternal Sersi’s (Gemma Chan) love interest, prepares to handle the Ebony Blade, a cursed MCU sword possibly connected to his secret family history. However, his moment is interrupted by a voice coming from offscreen. “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman,” the mysterious voice asks. Eternals director Chloé Zhao later confirmed that the voice belonged to Mahershala Ali’s Blade. And with that, the daywalker makes his much-anticipated MCU debut.

The MCU secretly set up Blade’s cameo in Eternals throughout its other films. For years, the MCU has hinted at the existence of vampires in Marvel. In Thor: Ragnarok, Korg (Taika Waititi) mentions vampires as a sly joke and reference to Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows. However, despite the humor of the moment, the line also seems to confirm vampires exist in the MCU. Loki then teased Blade and vampires multiple times, with Mobius (Owen Wilson) even mentioning vampires as one of the most powerful creatures in the universe. Additionally, a confiscated cross shows up as an Easter egg at the Time Variance Authority. Black Widow may even have a Blade connection, with Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) possibly learning sword fighting from watching Blade. It all subtly prepared the way for Ali’s character, integrating Blade into the MCU.

Because the MCU set up the Eternals cameo, Blade’s inclusion in Marvel’s films is less jarring. By having multiple projects mention vampires, the MCU saves itself from overcomplicated exposition later. There’s no need for it. In Ragnarok, vampires became part of the MCU. Then, in Loki, Mobius names them alongside Kree and Titans, establishing that they’re some of the MCU’s most formidable creatures. When it comes to Blade and vampires, Marvel played the long game. By allowing multiple projects to plant the necessary seeds to prepare fans for the character’s arrival, viewers are primed for the vampire-killing daywalker to appear.

In preparing fans for the character’s arrival, Marvel successfully integrated Blade into MCU history. At Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, Marvel’s Kevin Feige talked about the MCU becoming even more immersive, with several storylines carrying across movies and Disney+ shows. Ali’s Blade is a perfect example of that. The numerous Blade Easter eggs in Marvel’s films, as well as the cameo in Eternals, aren’t required viewing for anyone watching Marvel movies. However, the subtle moments serve as a way to firmly plant Mahershala Ali’s character in the MCU long before Blade ever premieres.
