Halo Infinites Campaign Is Too Easy

Halo Infinite’s campaign is a lot of fun, but the game feels too easy on the higher difficulties. The Halo Infinite campaign launched separately to the multiplayer mode on December 8, a month after the latter was released early to celebrate Xbox’s 20th-anniversary. Infinite’s story follows the heroics of legendary protagonist Master Chief, as the spartan works to rebuild the UNSC across Zeta Halo to defeat The Banished. Infinite’s campaign is set in a new open world environment where players can hunt down Banished bases and search for upgrades and customizations.

Halo Infinite’s campaign can be played on four difficulty settings just like in previous Halo titles. Players can choose between Easy, Normal, Heroic, and Legendary. As the difficulty increases, enemies will spawn in greater numbers, have better weapons, be harder to kill, and be more aggressive in their actions. Normally Halo games consider Heroic difficulty to be the baseline, with Legendary the ultimate test. In previous games, players would usually get help from a friend in co-op mode to complete Legendary missions, but as Halo Infinite does not have a co-op mode yet, those wanting to complete the game on Legendary are on their own.

Fortunately, Halo Infinite’s Legendary mode does not feel as hard as the previous title’s Legendary campaigns. There is a noticeable difference between the enemies in each difficulty, Elites are more aggressive with their energy swords, and Jackal snipers can one-shot in Legendary if players are not careful. Despite this, the Legendary difficulty feels more like the Heroic difficulty of the past. Players can die a lot if they are not careful of the numerous exploding objects around, but the enemies themselves don’t pose that big of a threat. Legendary doesn’t feel like a Legendary campaign, and the Heroic difficulty is easy to play through without dying constantly.

Halo Infinite’s Equipment Makes The Campaign Easier

Previous Halo games were very difficult on Legendary because a player only had whatever weapons and grenades Master Chief could find at the time. The new armor upgrades in Halo Infinite give the player a lot more equipment, which helps make the game easier. The drop shield and thrusters make it harder for enemies to do damage, and the grapple can stun enemies as well as grab guns from the ground when a player is out of ammunition. The equipment is fun to use and can result in some great combinations, but it makes the game easier and doesn’t recreate the same feeling previous Halo games had.

Furthermore, the friendly marines that occupy Zeta Halo will rush to help Master Chief and can prove a real difference in big fights. When approaching a banished base or eliminating a high-value target, getting a full razorback of marines can be just as good as any power weapon. In a lot of ways, the NPCs are better than Halo Infinite’s multiplayer teammates, which makes the campaign far easier. The NPCs rarely miss their shots, and when they eventually die they will drop whatever weapons they were carrying for Chief to pick up.

Halo Infinite’s campaign has breathed new life into the franchise with the new open world setting and additions to its gameplay, but it has become easier overall. With such a large area to explore and important developments to the story to discover, some players might not want such a hard task on a first playthrough but could want a greater challenge the second time around. Adding another level of difficulty would break continuity with every other Halo title, so making Legendary difficulty harder instead would make it more challenging and help the game feel more like older titles.
