Microsoft has confirmed that Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be fully compatible with Xbox Series X right after launch, complete with 120fps gameplay, improved splitscreen play, and more. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is prepping to finish its full yearlong upgrade that saw a port to PC for all its games and the addition of unlockable cosmetics via a battle pass system. The game features all the Halo games released before Halo 5: Guardians, as well as the overhauled Anniversary versions of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. It also includes the entire multiplayer suite of each game, letting players play on a total of six different game engines and hop from game-to-game in smooth matchmaking.

Halo fans will be happy to hear that The Master Chief Collection will be ready on launch day, as Halo Infinite definitely won’t be. Microsoft’s hopes for a slam dunk Xbox Series X launch title fell in August when developer 343 Industries’ latest project was pushed into 2021 due to fan backlash over its gameplay reveal (and so that 343 can presumably finish the game). There have since been reports that Halo Infinite’s free-to-play multiplayer, which has not been seen by the public at all, may split off from the campaign and become a separate release for the first time in the flagship series’ history.

In the meantime, Xbox Series X|S owners will be able to revisit the entire Halo series at a much higher fidelity. Xbox Marketing Head Aaron Greenberg released the full details on the confirmed upgrades for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which are coming a week after launch on November 17. The game will feature 120fps gameplay in both campaign and multiplayer as well as improved performance in splitscreen play. That’s an important addition considering the legacy of Halo: Combat Evolved, which launched before the introduction of Xbox Live and famously “launched a thousand LAN parties” around the country with its debut.

Excited to share that Halo Master Chief Collection will be fully optimized this holiday including 120fps campaign & multiplayer on both Xbox Series X & S. Also cross-gen play & adjustable FOV. Note all these upgrades are free to anyone who owns the game or is in Xbox Game Pass! https://t.co/ZZ5A5UOXhl

Greenberg adds a few more tidbits about the upgrades, including the expected cross-gen play between Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. More interesting is an adjustable FOV slider, which is already coming to the PC release of the game in the latest updates. This will let players see beyond the bounds of normal gameplay on either side, a preferred feature for PC shooter fans and competitive types. The feature has not been a common sight in console shooters, especially ones that first made their debut decades ago. Perhaps it will also be included in Halo 5 when it gets its inevitable Xbox Series X optimization, although such an upgrade hasn’t yet been officially announced.

It’s a bit of a bummer that Halo fans will have to wait a week to play their favorite series at full quality on Xbox Series X|S, but after waiting months for the console itself, the time will likely go by quickly. It will be interesting to see the mass reaction to playing games in 120fps, as well as playing with ray tracing further down the line. Enthusiasts will be well aware of these features, but the casual audience will be introduced through this console generation.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is available now on Xbox One and PC, and it will launch on Xbox Series X/S on November 17, 2020.
