NBC’s Thomas Harris adaptation Hannibal is home to many complex and ethically ambiguous characters. Who are the most and least loved in the show?

Everyone whose ever watched a movie knows about the character Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter. He’s the most notorious serial killer from Thomas Harris’s novel that later turned into one of Hollywood’s most successful films. The characters from the books and films got a revamp in 2013 with the drama show Hannibal.
This time fans got to see a much more disturbing and perplexing look into the serial killer, but into characters like Will Graham and Jack Crawford as well. Fans of the show have their opinions on what characters they absolutely hated by the end and those who deserved some sympathy.
10 Hate: Bedelia Du Maurier
Bedelia De Maurier (Gillian Anderson) is introduced as the psychologist to Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). Who knew that someone like Lecter would need his own psychiatrist? As her role progressed, she becomes an unfavorable character regardless of some sympathetic feelings towards her.
Fans come to realize that despite her being level headed and refraining from any form of friendship with Hannibal, she does little to stop him. She is aware of who he might really be but refuses to delve into it. By the end of the third season, she becomes completely brainwashed by Hannibal and turns a blind eye to his murderous ways.
9 Like: Margot Verger
Margot Verger (Katharine Isabelle) is a character that most fans feel more sympathy towards. She still has her devious ways, but her family backstory and what she goes through in her time on the show makes her easier to understand.
Margot is at first Hannibal’s patient. As her story unfolds she does manipulate Will (Hugh Dancy ) so she can get pregnant. She lost some brownie points there. But viewers soon discover that the real evil is her bother, who is sadistic and abused Margot as a child. He even drugs her and gives her a hysterectomy in retaliation. Fans rallied behind her when she decides enough is enough and puts him in his place.
8 Hate: Abigail Hobbs
One of the main reasons for putting Abigail (Kacey Rohl) in the “hate” category is due to her devious and manipulative ways when it came to her relationship with Will. After killing her father, Will felt responsible for Abigail in a paternal way. But so did Hannibal. Will is unaware that behind closed doors Hannibal was manipulating Abigail.
It’s later uncovered that Abigail, behind her sweet girl façade, was her father’s accomplice in his murders. Will felt deceived, and even more so when Hannibal and her faked her death. All the sympathy Will felt towards Abigail was only a ruse because they wanted him to commit to an evil life they wanted to live.
7 Like: Frederick Chilton
Frederick Chilton (Raúl Esparza) is an in-between character, because he often swayed between being devious and being helpful in his own way. At the beginning most fans disliked him for his bizarre fascination with criminally insane. It made sense, as he was he the administrator of the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.
Fans didn’t necessarily like that he made Will out to be consumed with his supposed “murderous” ways when incarcerated at the hospital. But he did slightly turn a new leaf when realizing that the real killer might actually be Hannibal and aids in discovering the truth. He also happens to be the victim of a couple of killers and survives.
6 Hate: Dr. Alana Bloom
Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas) is one of the main characters in the show who goes through as much of a drastic evolution as the rest. But along her journey, fans came to dislike her quite a bit. At first she was the guardian and friend to Will who saw his involvement in the murder cases to be ill-advised and often looked out for him.
There was even a small romance. But it all turned sour when Alana becomes enchanted by Hannibal and starts a relationship. She becomes so invested in him that she refuses to acknowledge Will’s warnings on who he really is until it’s too late. She later becomes cold and dark and comes to be an adviser to Mason Verger. But she did at least help Margot get her wish in the end and tries to protect their future.
5 Like: Beverly Katz
Part of the forensic investigative team working with Will is Beverly Katz (Hettienne Park). She was a central supporting character for a majority of the show that fans came to adore. She and Will developed a friendship and understanding. She didn’t disregard Will’s peculiar social behavior or his intellect in recreating murder scenes.
Above all, she never truly believed Will to have been capable of murder, and even asks for his help in certain cases. Beverly also believes Will when he claims that Hannibal is the real evil and becomes wary of him. In order to uncover the truth and help Will, she starts to investigate on her own, but sadly is proven right and is killed by Hannibal.
4 Hate: Mason Verger
Mason Verger (Michael Pitt) is one of the antagonists of the show that really got under people’s skin in the worst way possible. Since his introduction, Mason has a bizarre and grotesque way of looking at the world. It made viewer’s skin crawl.
It only worsened when discovering that Mason is sadistic and abused his twin sister as a child. He was so awful that even Hannibal disliked him.
3 Like: Jack Crawford
Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) is one of the most likable characters, but he does have his minor flaws. At first fans might come to see Jack as being too forceful in Will’s involvement with cases. But he does give him an opportunity to leave. Along the way, he comes to care for Jack’s overall well-being.
Sadly, he’s one that doesn’t initially believe Will’s claim that Hannibal is a serial killer, and even believes Will to be one. Thankfully, Jack sees the light and realizes how wrong he really was, and even loses his job over trying to help Will. By the third season, Jack goes on his own journey to find Hannibal and make things right.
2 Hate: Hannibal Lecter
It goes without saying that Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) is the most disliked character. It’s really the purpose of his character to begin with. Fans are already aware of who he is, but his actions in the show only intensify the ill feelings towards him. Hannibal’s biggest mistake, besides the murders, is manipulating Will to a point that he starts to go insane.
He purposely used psychiatric techniques to gain Will’s confidence. Will is unaware that Hannibal is manipulating him in ways to induce blackouts. Hannibal even hides Will’s true medical condition that’s causing him so much pain. Beyond this, Hannibal also deceives everyone around him and brainwashed Abigail to believe she’s like him. He also encourages other killers to do their work and threatens Will’s family.
1 Like: Will Graham
Will Graham is the main protagonist in the series. Part of the reason why he’s a likable character is that fans see his personal struggle with himself. Will isn’t inherently evil. From the start, audiences see Will’s dislike towards his special gift and his involvement in cases. He even derails after having to kill Abigail’s father and is haunted by it.
Will only wants to see the truth but the only way to get it is by succumbing to the darkness of the murder. Fans sympathize with Will as he gets trapped in Hanibal’s web.
