Over the course of three seasons on NBC, Dr. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) ended many lives, and here’s his full body count. Serial killers have become a common subject for TV shows, sometimes as the focal character, and other times as the big bad villain needing to be caught. In a way, Hannibal Lecter is an example of both, as he’s one of the lead characters on his titular series, and the main villain behind its most heinous acts.

At the same time, the viewer spends so much time getting to know Hannibal, and seeing what makes him tick, that it’s hard not to get seduced over to his side in the same way Will Graham eventually does. Hannibal is well-dressed, handsome, well-spoken, intelligent, and highly charismatic. He’s utterly charming at times, and as twisted as his mind is, there’s a sort of strange logic to how he operates. Of course, no matter how likable he is, one obviously can’t ever really condone the prospect of killing and eating other people.

When a show is centered on a serial killer, there’s naturally going to be lots of death going on, and that’s definitely the case with Hannibal. Here’s the full count of how many victims he claimed over the course of the series’ run.

How Many People Hannibal Killed in Season 1

In season 1 of Hannibal, the sophisticated serial killer racks up a kill count of 19 people, at least as far as confirmed kills. The first seven were unnamed victims Hannibal claimed as the Chesapeake Ripper before the premiere episode, but all are mentioned during the show proper. The eighth ripper victim was a man named Jeremy Olstead, whose mangled corpse got a spotlight during “Entree.” Hannibal then murdered Cassie Boyle and Marissa Schurr, purposely done in a style that copied Garret Jacob Hobbs, the Minnesota Shrike. In “Oeuf,” Lecter has Jack Crawford over for dinner, but it’s revealed that the “rabbit” he’s serving is actually another unnamed victim.

Hannibal adds four victims to the count in “Sorbet,” Andrew Caldwell, Michelle Vocalson, Darrell Ledgerwood, and Christopher Word, serving them up to his friends at a dinner party. In “Fromage,” Hannibal offed an annoying, obsessive patient named Franklyn Froideveaux, then actually murders another killer, Tobias Budge, who had been planning to kill Franklyn himself. Hannibal, naturally frames Tobias for Franklyn’s murder. In “Buffet Froid,” Hannibal killed a neurologist named Dr. Donald Sutcliffe, an old colleague. Finally, in “Roti,” Hannibal gave Dr. Carson Nahn a “Colombian Necktie,” in order to frame fellow psychopath Abel Gideon for the crime.

How Many People Hannibal Killed in Season 2

During Hannibal season 2, Dr. Lecter ended 17 more lives. His first was another fellow serial killer, James Gray, aka The Muralist. In “Hassun,” Hannibal absolutely mangles the judge presiding over Will Graham’s trial, Judge Davies, after he refuses to allow new evidence to be presented in court. “Takiawase” played host to a very unpopular kill, as Hannibal murdered Will’s investigative colleague Beverly Katz, who had become a fan-favorite, but gotten too close to Hannibal’s secrets. In “Futamono, Hannibal throws another dinner party, meaning it’s time for the Chesapeake Ripper to claim eight more victims to provide a truly sumptuous feast.

In “Yakimono,” Hannibal finally rids himself of old enemy Abel Gideon, after first chopping off his limbs and feeding them to the man. He then frames Dr. Chilton for the murder. To further that narrative, he kills two FBI agents as well. In “Tome-wan,” Hannibal kills Mason Verger’s henchman Matteo and Carlo Deogracias, the latter being eaten alive by Mason’s own pigs. Finally, in the season 2 finale, “Mizumono,” Hannibal’s double life is revealed, with him attempting to kill Jack, Will, and Alana, and succeeding in dispatching Abigail Hobbs.

How Many People Hannibal Killed in Season 3

As part of Hannibal season 3, the cannibalistic gourmet added 9 more people to his kill count. It’s his least of the three seasons, but that’s partially because Hannibal spent part of the season locked up. The season 3 premiere, “Antipasto,” sees an on the lamb Hannibal working as a museum curator in Italy under the identity of Dr. Roman Fell. To accomplish that, he killed the existing curator, Dr. Fell, and Fell’s wife, having Bedelia Du Maurier take over her identity. It’s also revealed that Hannibal killed a couple in Florence 20 years back, which was attributed to the real-life “Monster of Florence” killer.

In “Antipasto,” Hannibal also kills Antony Dimmond, an old friend of Dr. Fell, even after Antony doesn’t expose his ruse. In “Contorno,” Hannibal guts and hangs Detective Ronaldo Pazzi from a balcony, much as he did in the Hannibal book and movie. In “Digestivo,” Hannibal dispatches Cordell, Mason Verger’s put-upon servant, removing Cordell’s face and placing it over Mason’s mutilated visage. Hannibal’s final victim on the TV show is none other than Francis Dolarhyde, aka the Red Dragon, who he kills with Will’s help in the series finale.

Hannibal: All 45 People Dr. Lecter Killed (All 3 Seasons)

The above sections include every named victim Hannibal is confirmed to have killed over the course of the TV show’s three seasons, along with a few people he technically killed prior to the premiere episode, but figured into Hannibal’s identities as The Chesapeake Ripper and The Monster of Florence copycat. In addition to the 29 victims named above, Hannibal is also confirmed to have killed a further 16 unnamed people. That puts the not so good doctor at a grand total of 45 confirmed kills during Hannibal’s time on the air.

Hannibal’s kill count would expand to 62 if the 16 victims killed by the real-life Monster of Florence were factored in, but the timeline doesn’t really make sense for Hannibal to have committed those murders, as they happened in the 1960s and 1970s, and he would’ve been too young to believably be the killer back then. Also worth noting are all the people Hannibal caused to be killed by others via manipulation, such as Garret Jacob Hobbs by Will and Neal Frank by Bedelia Du Maurier. They’re not being counted toward his kills, but he still definitely bears responsibility. Hopefully Hannibal season 4 happens soon, opening up the opportunity for the titular killer to get back to work.
