How Gotham Knights’ Open World Will Evolve With the Story

WB Games Montreal has spent a lot of time explaining the different heroes of their upcoming game Gotham Knights, but there’s another character they’re equally excited to talk about: the city of Gotham. In a recent interview, the studio explained how Gotham will be “a living, breathing ecosystem” that will evolve as the story progresses.

Gotham Knights is an open-world action RPG that is set shortly after the death of Batman. Players will have the option to swap between Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin and Red Hood as they pick up the pieces after their mentor’s death. The game will feature several classic villains, as well as the mysterious Court of Owls, who likely had a hand in Batman’s demise. Players will be able to customize their heroes and play Gotham Knights solo or with a friend in online two-player co-op.

In a recent interview with the PlayStation Blog, Creative Director Patrick Redding explained how the team has been working to make Gotham dynamic. The city will be full of ordinary citizens going about their life, a welcome change from the empty streets of the Arkham series. Redding also mentions that criminal factions and the Gotham City Police will interact with each other, though the specifics of how have not been laid out. It’s possible that players might come across the police dealing with smaller level criminals, or two rival criminal groups fighting over turf.

Gotham Knights World Will Change to Reflect the Story

But most importantly, the city will change as the story progresses. Players have already seen a glimpse of this in the recent gameplay demo at DC FanDome, where Batgirl heads out to deal with Mr. Freeze. As she approaches the area where he is active, the area becomes increasingly coated in snow, and lightning strikes add an element of danger for Batgirl (and the ordinary citizens she passes). Ostensibly before and after this mission, this part of town will not be experiencing extreme weather conditions, though how quickly it will take Mr. Freeze’s tower of ice to disappear remains to be seen. It’s easy to imagine similar instances happening in Gotham as other super-villains make their moves. A vine-covered building for Poison Ivy, for instance, or parts of the town in flames if Firefly shows up.

WB Games Montreal is very focused on making players feel like they are working in a living environment in Gotham Knights. The developers stress that this is a game that takes place over multiple nights, and players should feel like they are interacting with the city and integral to keeping it safe. They also teased that the Court of Owls, a secret society that has manipulated Gotham since its founding, was taken into consideration when designing Gotham itself. It’s possible that players might find nods to the Court of Owls in certain corners of the city, or that architectural elements might help players as they look for clues about what the Court of Owls is planning. In short, every aspect of design seems to be aimed at making sure the Gotham of Gotham Knights is just as important and engaging as the heroes themselves.
