The director of Suicide Squad has said that Harley Quinn’s story arc in the movie was eviscerated. Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad hit theaters in August 2016, during a time where the DCEU was still desperately trying to be a shared universe. It was universally panned by critics and audiences, despite it impressively grossing over $746 million worldwide. Many thought the film was a mess, with choppy editing and no real story for any of its characters. However, despite the criticism, Warner Bros. has a sequel (which is not really a sequel) for Suicide Squad coming out in 2021. And for all the criticism Ayer’s film receives, he did introduce one of the most popular DCEU characters – Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

Robbie’s Harley Quinn was one of the few, if not the only positive part of the 2016 installment of Suicide Squad. That led Warner Bros. to initially come up with the idea for Gotham City Sirens, before ultimately settling on Birds of Prey for Quinn’s next story. Despite not performing as well financially as Robbie’s first DCEU film, Cathy Yan’s film did a much better job telling an emotional and intriguing story of Harley Quinn. Even without the Joker in the film, it gave us a better Joker/Harley story as well. However, Yan was fortunate as she did not have the problem of Warner Bros. meddling with production like they did with Ayer’s film, and now Ayer has revealed his original vision for Harley Quinn was also changed.

On Twitter, a fan commented on one of Ayer’s replies about doing a live commentary of Suicide Squad by saying Harley, “was sexualized in the entire Suicide Squad movie” and in Birds of Prey, she “was a real character.” Ayer replied to the fan by stating that: “Sadly her story arc was eviscerated. It was her movie in so many ways.” He also said that he “tried” and that he “rendered Harley comic book accurate.” According to the director’s response, “Everything is political now. Everything. I just want to entertain. I will do better.”

Sadly her story arc was eviscerated. It was her movie in so many ways. Look I tried. I rendered Harley comic book accurate. Everything is political now. Everything. I just want to entertain. I will do better. https://t.co/8s4fewsBRH

Ayer’s response to the film once again sheds more light on his unfortunate experience with the DC project, as this is not the first time he has mentioned that Suicide Squad was supposed to be Harley Quinn’s movie. His initial vision was Harley escaping her relationship with the Joker, but with so much of that taken away, what was left may have led some fans to get a different interpretation of Quinn’s presentation. Although, Ayer can still be praised for his writing of Quinn as she did showcase a lot of her classic characteristics well. Had it not been for Harley Quinn’s story arc being “eviscerated,” Ayer may have received some of the same praise as Yan for her depiction of Harley in Birds of Prey.

Next, Robbie’s Harley Quinn will be seen in James Gunn’s soft reboot of Suicide Squad. Harley is one of the few characters who remain from Ayer’s version, and according to Gunn, Harley goes on “quite the journey” in his film. Despite some set photos showing Harley in a look reminiscent of her classic comic book look, not a lot is known about The Suicide Squad. But one thing seems certain, and that is Gunn appears to have the creative freedom Ayer did not have when making Suicide Squad. Hopefully, this will mean Gunn’s version is a more enjoyable experience for fans of DC and Harley Quinn.
