Harrison Ford Doesn’t Want Anyone To Replace Him As Indiana Jones EVER

Harrison Ford doesn’t ever want anyone to replace him as Indiana Jones. Having played the charming archeologist for nearly 40 years, with yet another outing coming soon with the as-yet-untitled Indiana Jones 5, Ford has a firm stance on the character’s future.

In 1981, Ford brought Indiana Jones to life in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Directed by Steven Spielberg, based on a story by George Lucas, and penned by Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’s Lawrence Kasdan, the film was a love letter to old film serials from the 1930s, ultimately becoming a staple ’80s franchise that defined a generation. However, though there has already been a spinoff with The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, as well as other voice actors who have voiced the character in a number of Indiana Jones video games, Ford has no interest in passing the torch to anyone else.

In an interview with USA Today, Ford was asked who he’d “like to see as Indiana Jones” when he’s eventually “done with that role.” Putting his hand on host Craig Melvin’s shoulder, he said, amusingly, “Nobody is gonna be Indiana Jones. Don’t you get it? I’m Indiana Jones,” adding, “When I’m gone, he’s gone.” Ford then jokingly apologized to other actors who might have hoped they’d someday take up the mantle after Ford eventually retires the role, saying, “This is a hell of a way to tell Chris Pine… I’m sorry, man.”

Over the past few years, Ford has been no stranger to revisiting iconic characters he played in the ’70s and ’80s. After playing Indy again in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, 19 years after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ford also starred in sequels to Blade Runner and Star Wars, playing Rick Deckard and Han Solo, respectively. So, Ford seems to have as much of a soft spot for his most beloved characters as his fans do.

Though there hasn’t been any suggestion that Indiana Jones might kick the bucket in Indiana Jones 5, it has potential to be the end of Indy for good. Though he was game to return to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he had always wanted to Han Solo to die; and seeing as his wish came true, Han’s death could be a bad omen for Indy in the upcoming film – especially if Ford is looking to officially say goodbye to all of his most iconic roles. Then again, since Ford doesn’t want anyone replacing him, and given that he only wanted Han to die in order to sacrifice himself for the other characters to “lend gravitas and emotional weight,” Indy may be in the clear. He’s always flown solo (no pun intended), so he doesn’t exactly have a familiar crew for whom he’d be sacrificing himself – aside from Marion (Karen Allen).
