While splitting your soul into a variety of pieces is, on the surface, a pretty clever way of evading death, Voldemort’s choice of Horcrux objects left quite a lot to be desired. First of all, he chose things with very clear meaning. It might have seemed quite poetic on his behalf, but it only led to a series of puzzles that were, in the end, pretty easy to work out.

We’ve thought of 10 alternative objects Voldemort could have used as Horcruxes. They might not have looked as good on-screen or written down, but they’d have probably helped him stay alive for a lot longer. Even if they might not have exactly been ideal…

10 The Orphanage He Grew Up In

Voldemort’s orphanage would have been the ultimate choice for one of his Horcruxes. It ticks the box of having a deep personal connection to Voldemort, while also being well-defended. Harry couldn’t exactly go and blow up an orphanage now, could he? As Rowling explained in the books, Voldemort’s previous home was destroyed and turned into an office block, but the location is still just as important to Voldemort, and had he turned it into a Horcrux, he could have prevented it from being demolished. It would also have been difficult for Harry to secretly destroy.

9 His Wand

We aren’t exactly sure of the technical demands of this one, as Voldemort might actually have needed his wand to create a Horcrux in the first place. But if he didn’t, then his wand could have been the perfect hiding place.

He would have his wand basically in his hand at all times, meaning the only way anyone could get hold of his wand was to kill him, which they couldn’t do, because he always had a piece of his soul in his wand!

8 His Father’s Grave

It’s not as obvious or difficult to destroy as an entire orphanage, but people wouldn’t take too kindly to Harry destroying the grave of a dead man either – making this a Horcrux protected by the public, as well as Voldemort’s secrets. It had meaning to Voldemort (even if he didn’t exactly see eye to eye with his father), but as his family history isn’t well known, it wouldn’t be an obvious choice for others to seek out.

7 Something Inside The Chamber Of Secrets

The diary itself might have been destroyed in the Chamber of Secrets, but Tom Riddle (who had been down there) didn’t think to actually use something inside the Chamber as a Horcrux.

The place had a lot of personal meaning to him and Slytherin and was an area of the school that pretty much no one had ever been inside (or even knew how to access), so it would have been a great hiding place – perhaps one of the statues there would have made an excellent Horcrux.

6 The Room Of Requirement

The purpose of the Room of Requirement was to give students of Hogwarts a place that met their exact needs, right? It could also alter, creating multiple different rooms, with different contents, depending on the needs of the student at the time. Voldemort could have gone to the room looking for a room that could never be found again. That way, he could make that room the Horcrux (or just put something in it with the ‘never appear again’ caveat), hide something in there and have it effectively disappear from existence, leaving him immortal. Of course, Voldemort essentially thought he DID do this, as he didn’t understand how the Room worked, but still.

5 Another Heirloom From Borgin And Burkes

Voldemort only had one job (aside from being the Dark Lord) in his lifetime, and it was as a worker in Borgin and Burkes. It might have been his gateway to finding the locket and Hufflepuff’s cup, but a shop that specifically existed to sell dark objects would have been the perfect place for Voldemort to find something else useful. The Hand Of Glory, for example, was in the shop upon Harry’s visit, and given the layer of dust, could easily have been lurking out since Tom Riddle’s time.

4 The Sword Of Gryffindor

The logistics of this one are a little more difficult than many of the objects on this list as Voldemort couldn’t get access to any objects owned by Gryffindor, as he could Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.

However, if he had figured out a way to gain access to this impressive sword, turning it into a Horcrux would have saved his life. After all, it was this exact object that ended up destroying a few of his Horcruxes.

3 A Random Person

In fairness to Voldemort, he might not have realized that he could turn a human into a Horcrux, as he didn’t know about Harry. If he had known, however, all he would have needed to do was seek out a random person on the other side of the Earth, use them as a Horcrux, and he’d be defended for at least their life-span. No one would have figured it out if he chose a truly random person. The problem with this, of course, is that when that person died (especially if they died tragically young), that would mean a part of Voldemort’s soul destroyed.

2 A House Elf

Don’t tell Hermione about this one, but a House Elf loyal to Voldemort would be the perfect Horcrux for Voldemort. Not only would the elf be ‘happy’ (depending on your moral standpoint) to be of service, but thanks to their loyalty, they wouldn’t be able to tell a soul about their service.

Beyond that, unlike using a human, a House Elf lives around 200 years, and is incredibly difficult to kill. They are also incapable of being ordered to kill themselves, making a loyal House Elf a perfect Horcrux… for a couple of centuries, at least.

1 A Plastic Bag

The final, and most crazy of all of the alternative Horcrux ideas is this: a plastic bag. Everyone knows that a discarded plastic bag takes hundreds of years to degrade. If Voldemort had used one of those to put a piece of his soul into, he could have taken it to a landfill and it would have been lost forever amongst the debris. It wouldn’t have been particularly poetic, but he’d have survived.
