The wizarding world of Harry Potter is full of amazing magical locations that have become as memorable and iconic as the characters and stories themselves. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is obviously the most beloved setting in the entire wizarding world, but it’s safe to say that every Harry Potter fan has dreamed about what it would be like to walk down Diagon Alley as well.

Diagon Alley is a central shopping area for London’s witches and wizards, and although it fully captures the magic of the Harry Potter universe, there are some aspects of this outdoor mall that don’t really make sense.

10 Why Is Its Name A Tongue-Twister?

It’s obvious that Diagon Alley is a play on the word “diagonally,” and perhaps the topsy-turvy nature of the alley is what earned it its name.

But when Harry Potter accidentally winds up in Knockturn Alley because of a mispronunciation, it seems obvious that naming the street such an easy title to flub may have been a dangerous mistake for less articulate witches and wizards.

9 Its Lack Of Food Options

The Leaky Cauldron is obviously a wizarding world mainstay, and in addition to being an inn, it’s also a pub. And it’s an integral part of Diagon Alley, so any wizards who are feeling peckish can always find a bite to eat there.

However, in comparison to typical shopping centers, it’s bizarre that Diagon Alley isn’t really home to any restaurants, it seems like with all of that foot traffic it’d be an ideal setup, and if The Leaky Cauldron isn’t offering something appealing, then witches and wizards need to venture out into the muggle world for food.

8 The Overrepresentation Of Sweets Shops

It would be one thing if Diagon Alley wasn’t home to any restaurants simply because magical square footage is hard to come by, and it’s fair to say that there’s no reason why its valuable space should be taken up with non-magical products.

However, Diagon Alley is home to an ice cream parlor, Florean Fortescue’s, and Sugarplum’s Sweets Shop. It’s odd both because they don’t really fit in with the other stores, but also because, how many sweets are witches and wizards really buying?

7 The Overrepresentation Of Joke Shops

Magical jokes and prepackaged tricks are undoubtedly a very cool element of the wizarding world. However, in the relatively small space of Diagon Alley, there are two joke shops.

Of course, one is the iconic Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, and the other is Gambol and Japes Wizarding Joke Shop. But honestly, how many magical jokes are regular witches and wizards buying to keep two joke shops in business?

6 Its Lack Of Security

Perhaps there are undercover magical agents roaming around Diagon Alley, but honestly, even in standard muggle malls, there is mall security.

Given that Diagon Alley is an outdoor shopping mall brimming with people who have literal magical powers, it’s bizarre that there are no law enforcement agents or basic security guards to make sure that things don’t literally pop off whenever wizards or witches fight over the coolest new broomstick.

5 Its Inconvenient Locale

While it’s entirely understandable that there would be a considerable amount of hidden magical people and places in London, it seems like the amount of magic that it would take in order to hide Diagon Alley in one of the most densely populated places in the world would be too much.

And of course, traveling is no great difficulty for witches and wizards, so why not put Diagon Alley in the middle of nowhere instead of in London?

4 It’s Size

Diagon Alley is a strange location in that it both seems too big and too small. On the one hand, it seems like an inconveniently large place for magic to have to hide in the middle of London.

But on the other, literally every witch and wizard in the UK seems to shop there, and it doesn’t seem like the one row of shops is enough to satisfy the needs of every witch and wizard in the country.

3 It’s A Near Monopoly

Granted, it seems unlikely that the Ministry of Magic has any anti-monopoly laws in place, but if they did, then it seems like Diagon Alley would have to either diversify or shut down.

Outside of some tiny wizarding villages throughout the countryside, it seems like Diagon Alley is the only place where magical folk can buy anything in the magical world, which doesn’t exactly seem like fair or competitive business practices.

2 How Does It Satisfy All Of It’s Customers?

Besides the obvious issue that so many shops that are devoted to a specific niche seem to be the only wizarding shop of its kind in the nearby area, it’s hard to understand how all of Diagon Alley’s customers are okay with this arrangement as well.

If a witch needs a wand, the only place in the country that she can buy one is at Ollivander’s. If a wizard needs a bank, Gringott’s is their only option. It doesn’t seem like wizardkind would be satisfied with their lack of options.

1 It’s One Of The Only Wizard Shopping Centers In London

Clearly the population of magical people in the world in relation to muggles is very small. But in a metropolitan area that is home to millions upon millions of people, it seems wildly unlikely that there would only be one shopping area for wizards.

In theory, there would probably need to be half a dozen Diagon Alleys across the city to satisfy the needs of all the magical customers in the area.
