There are many villains throughout the course of the Harry Potter series. Lord Voldemort is the most well-known, while the likes of Bellatrix Lestrange, Peter Pettigrew, Lucius Malfoy and Dolores Umbridge also get up to all sorts of dastardly deeds. And Barty Crouch Jr is another.

Crouch Jr appears in the Goblet of Fire blockbuster, played by British actor David Tennant. We see him pose as Alastor Moody for a whole year before he’s unmasked at the end of the movie as an ally to Voldemort himself. While that’s the case, however, many details about the dangerous individual were left out.

10 He Was Close With The Lestranges

In the Goblet of Fire, we see Igor Karkaroff drop the bombshell that Barty Crouch Jr took part in the tortures of Neville Longbottom’s parents, Frank and Alice. What’s not revealed, however, is who else took part in that horrific crime.

The book sheds light on this and it’s revealed that Crouch acted with help from Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Rabastan Lestrange. The Lestranges were also carted off to Azkaban as punishment for their horrible actions. All three would later break out during the events of the Order of the Phoenix, however, and rejoined the Dark Lord once again.

9 He Claimed He Was Innocent In The Trial

The fourth movie doesn’t paint Crouch Jr as an innocent man. As soon as he’s accused of torturing the Longbottoms by Karkaroff he tries to sprint away and, when his father Barty Crouch Sr disowns him, he lets out a villainous snarl. But this is something that’s again different in the source material.

Crouch Jr proclaims his innocence, shaking like a leaf as he’s sentenced. He cries out for his parents, asking them to come to his rescue, but this doesn’t happen. His father, under pressure from the wizarding community to clamp down on Voldemort’s followers, shouts his guilty verdict with vigor while his wife sobs silently next to him.

8 Everybody Thought He Was Neglected

In the Goblet of Fire, Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet Sirius Black in Hogsmeade. There, they talk about the arrest of Barty Crouch Jr and the consequences it had in the aftermath. And it’s there that Sirius suggests everybody thought Crouch Sr had failed his son, not spending enough time with him growing up due to a determination to rise up the ranks and take on the ultimate role of Minister of Magic.

“Should have spent a bit more time at home with his family, shouldn’t he?” he says during their conversation. “Ought to have left the office early once in a while… gotten to know his own son.” It seems as though there was a great deal of sympathy for Crouch Jr, despite the horrific nature of his actions.

7 He Was Saved by His Mother

Crouch Jr’s escape from Azkaban is never explained in the movies. One moment he’s sent away, the next he’s back at Lord Voldemort’s side ready to do whatever his master demands. But the fourth book sheds light on how he was able to get away from the prison – and it involves his mother.

Under the influence of Veritaserum, Tennant’s character reveals how she, upon finding out she was dying, took Polyjuice Potion in order to change places with her beloved child. She wants nothing more but to save her son from a life sentence and, knowing her own time in the world is limited, she takes his cell in Azkaban while he goes free. The Death Eater’s mother dies there, alone and without her family present.

6 He Sat Near Harry At The Quidditch World Cup

Crouch Jr is present at the campsite following the Quidditch World Cup, casting the Dark Mark and sending Death Eaters fleeing as a result. But the Goblet of Fire doesn’t reveal what the book does: that he was actually present for the match between Bulgaria and Ireland itself.

In the book, Barty Crouch Sr’s seat at the final is presumed to be empty. Yet that’s not the case at all, with his son sitting there while under an invisibility cloak accompanied by his house-elf, Winky. Crouch fights off the Imperius Curse placed on him by his father and takes Harry’s wand, later using it to cast Voldemort’s infamous symbol into the sky.

5 He Was Eventually Freed By Voldemort And Peter Pettigrew

After his exploits at the Quidditch World Cup, Crouch Jr is again imprisoned in his own home. His father, despite firing Winky, is determined to keep a close eye on him and avoid him escaping and causing any more trouble, knowing his son dreams of finding Lord Voldemort and restoring him back to full power.

That is until Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew set him free. They lift the Imperius Curse and start to control Crouch Sr, giving the son the freedom he’s always pined for. It’s then that he’s given orders to become Alastor Moody for the year so they can set up a showdown between Harry and Voldemort while using the Triwizard Tournament to their advantage.

4 He Gave Harry His Auror Dream

As mentioned above, Crouch Jr impersonates Moody for a whole school year. He keeps the real thing prisoner in his own trunk, keeping him alive so he can pluck his hair for the Polyjuice Potion and find better ways to impersonate him so nobody knows the truth.

And, while being Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, he tells Harry he should become an Auror due to his brilliance in the subject. This stays with the Boy Who Lived even after the Death Eater’s unmasking and gives him a dream to hold onto for life after Hogwarts. Once the battle with Voldemort is finished, Harry ends up becoming a dark-wizard catcher for the Ministry of Magic – despite their horrible treatment of him in the years previously.

3 He Gained 12 O.W.L’s

In the Goblet of Fire book, Harry encounters Barty Crouch Sr while he’s going for a stroll with Viktor Krum. There, he overhears the Ministry of Magic worker talking to somebody inside his head. During his babbling, he’s overheard saying how proud he was that Barty Crouch Jr managed to achieve 12 O.W.L’s, a number that shows just how gifted he was before he decided to use his magical talents for evil.

This didn’t happen in the movies, with Harry, Ron, and Hermione instead stumbling across Crouch Sr’s body. There’s no preamble before his death and this takes away some of the drama.

2 He Transformed His Father’s Body

While under the influence of Veritaserum, Crouch Jr opens up on murdering his father. And he crudely reveals that he transformed his dad’s corpse into a bone, burying it in the Forbidden Forest.

This suggests he was never found and it’s unknown if there was ever any funeral or ceremony for the Ministry of Magic employee. It also shows just how much the son hated the father, that he didn’t even have enough respect for him to give him a proper sendoff. Instead, his remains most likely stayed in the Hogwarts grounds until the end of time.

1 He Was Given The Dementor’s Kiss

The Dementor’s Kiss is a fate you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. It involves the horrible creatures sucking your soul out through your mouth, effectively leaving you in a vegetative state. The Goblet of Fire movie doesn’t go into the gruesome details – but the book does.

And it’s used on Barty Crouch Jr when he’s unmasked as an imposter. Unfortunately, it happens at Hogwarts itself. This riles Albus Dumbledore, who clashes with Cornelius Fudge for allowing Dementors on the premises. To make matters even worse, Fudge doesn’t even believe anything the Death Eater has confessed to – labeling him a ‘madman’.
