Horizon Forbidden West Will Improve Zero Dawns Melee Combat

Horizon Forbidden West is on the way, albeit without an exact release date yet, and will mark the second entry in the post-apocalyptic, action-adventure series. Developer Guerrilla Games was previously known for its first person shooter expertise from working on the Killzone franchise, but had a breakout hit with 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn. As a direct sequel, Forbidden West will look to build on the success of its predecessor, while attempting to improve various aspects of gameplay.

Horizon Zero Dawn was generally well-received, and celebrated as a unique entry in the ever-growing lineup of PlayStation exclusives, but – like any game – didn’t come without criticism. Zero Dawn puts players in control of Aloy, a primarily bow-wielding warrior of the Nora tribe. The game’s ranged combat is where it shines, with Aloy’s large weapon variety and a host of different strategies available. Unfortunately, the melee combat is not nearly as exciting.

Aloy’s spear allows her to perform a light attack, a heavy attack, and other contextual moves, such as overriding and controlling specific types of machines. Melee combat in Zero Dawn was largely boring and unsatisfying, and only came into play when facing off against other human enemies – much less exciting encounters than those with the machines. Horizon Forbidden West, with new skills and abilities, is looking to improve the series’ melee combat as a whole.

More Elaborate Melee Combat in Horizon Forbidden West

Following the recent gameplay reveal, Horizon Forbidden West game director Mathijs de Jonge and narrative director Benjamin McCaw sat down with Game Informer to elaborate on some of the video’s details and provide some more insight on the game’s development. One specific topic of the interview is Horizon Forbidden West’s improvements to the series melee combat, which the developers note is largely tied to the new skill tree.

Players will be able to spend skill points on acquiring melee combos, something that didn’t exist in Horizon Zero Dawn. There will reportedly be quite a few combos, each having different advantages in combat. The melee combat abilities also appear to be more compatible with ranged attacks. For instance, the Guerrilla developers explained a specific melee ability called the Resonator Blast, which “paints” a spot on an enemy when struck that will cause an explosion if the player then shoots that spot.

Although asked about the possibility of more melee weapons than just Aloy’s spear being in the game, the developers did not confirm whether or not that would be the case. A greater focus on melee combat is a very welcome addition to Horizon Forbidden West, which may ultimately surpass its predecessor.
