Harry Potter is one of the most beloved characters ever. But from mischief at Hogwarts to his hero complex, the boy wizard had flaws that got worse.

In the Harry Potter film series, the eponymous hero constantly strives to do right, save the day and come out on top. But while Harry may have started out fresh faced and heroic, over time his actions often bordered on dangerous.

Fans know that Harry’s human and he’s flawed, and his backstory is unbelievably tragic. However, it’s time to zero in on his flaws and see that the Boy Who Lived isn’t as perfect as fans think. Here are 10 ways Harry got worse and worse as the series went on.

10 He Needs To Be The Hero

Harry’s heroism is both his best and worst quality. In his first year, he tries to go to McGonagall and Dumbledore for help, but after this, Harry generally chooses to act on his own when he thought something bad was happening.

Harry doesn’t tell any teachers where the Chamber of Secrets is — except for the useless Lockhart. Harry also flies to the Ministry rather than Grimmauld Place when he thinks Sirius is in danger. His growing need to save the day cost his godfather his life.

9 Making It All About Him

Maybe this is what a kid who suddenly realized he was magic, rich and famous would be like. Most of the adults in his life enable this: they pick him first to play with hippogriffs, let him off for blowing up Aunt Marge, and defend him from his angsty Boggart even though everybody’s fear is also terrifying to them.

This rubs off on Harry and he often makes everything about him. He endangers Ron and Hermione by attempting to kill Sirius at their first meeting. He later leads his friends to the Department of Mysteries to save his godfather. In the final installment, Harry says he won’t let anyone else die for him, which Ron has to talk him down from.

8 I Am The Chosen One

When Snape says that Harry seems to relish his fame, is he really wrong? Harry says he doesn’t like everyone knowing his name. His actions, though…

From Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he starts to act like he’s above people. He’s happy to ignore Neville until Gillyweed is brought up. He’s sullen and dismissive to Ron and Hermione’s advice about Umbridge in Order of the Phoenix. Harry’s so certain of his own path in Deathly Hallows that he doesn’t listen to Luna until she shouts at him — which ultimately proves vital.

7 He’s Reactive And Doesn’t Learn

People follow Harry because they believe in him. However, he usually leads them into bad situations and needs to be bailed out. Although Hermione consistently tells him to think, Harry opts for action every time.

He leads Ron and Hermione into the Ministry under Polyjuice Potion, then rips Mad Eye’s eye from a door, giving them all away. Harry never learns not to be reactive and his cocksure behavior becomes more precarious. He even goes back to Hogwarts, not knowing what the last Horcrux is, but telling everyone to make a stand while he figures it out.

6 Continually Acting As If He’s Above Rules

Harry’s rule-breaking isn’t always as innocuous as stealing a lollipop from Neville while invisible. At age 11, Harry takes it upon himself to save the stone from Quirrell, which was arguably perfectly safe. At 13, he wants to murder Sirius Black, who at the time was thought to be incredibly dangerous. And if Harry had listened about the importance of Occlumency, he might not have fallen prey to Voldemort’s trap, which got Sirius killed.

5 He Never Appreciates Dobby Or Kreacher

In the films, Harry frees Dobby, and then doesn’t see him again until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, where they say a quick hello. Harry is Dobby’s hero, and yes he set him free, but Harry doesn’t show much affection for the little guy until he dies in Harry’s arms.

Harry’s sadness at Dobby’s death and insistence on burying him himself doesn’t hit home as hard without them having more history together. The films also cut much of Kreacher’s expanded role and redemption arc when Harry starts showing him some decency. In the films, Harry just goes on using the elves as his personal errand boys.

4 He Almost Murdered Malfoy

Now, Malfoy is a real piece of work. But, in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Harry confronts Malfoy about his attempted hit on Dumbledore. Without thinking, he blurts out a spell marked “for enemies,” without ever having tested it before. If Snape hadn’t conveniently been the one to arrive and put things right, Malfoy was a goner. Perhaps think before you use dodgy spells – test them on a punching bag or something.

3 Not Understanding Ron

After seven years of friendship, Harry still doesn’t understand his best friend. Harry and Ron are both particularly susceptible to the locket’s dark influence in Deathly Hallows. The lack of progress in finding Horcruxes builds in Ron’s mind over time while he heals from a nasty injury. This all comes to a head when he loses faith in Harry and leaves the two behind to return to his family.

Harry is Ron’s best friend. Surely, he could see Ron’s animosity building and speak to him about the situation. There’s only three of them walking through the English countryside day after day; they could have cleared the air if Harry just thought about why Ron listened to the radio every night, hoping not to hear bad news. Hermione even pointed this out.

2 Using The Unforgivable Curses

Harry uses two of the three Unforgivable Curses as the series goes on. There never seems to be much moral dilemma when these scenes take place, or even after the heat of the moment has passed. So much emphasis is placed on how awful using these curses is, but Harry is fairly casual and proficient in their use. It’s a fitting statement on how even heroes can be corrupted in times of war.

1 He Doesn’t Thank People

Harry starts out incredibly grateful, wide-eyed at the slightest kindness and generally very polite. Later in the series, Harry often talks about how sorry he is that things happen, or how he had help in all of his adventures. But does he ever actually thank anyone? From Ron and Hermione to Dobby to Lupin and Sirius, people protect him, stand by him and put up with his angsty outbursts. His friends risk their lives to help him so often. It would have been very satisfying to see a scene where he thanks Ron and Hermione for always having his back.
