Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

As the protagonist of the Harry Potter series, the titular hero was responsible for much of the story’s events, which came down to the decisions he made and the opinions he had. Being a teenager, Harry let his emotions take control at numerous points, and he ultimately turned out to be wrong about when the impact of certain decisions unfolded.

That doesn’t mean Harry was always wrong or was unaware, with the protagonist actually being right about most of the crucial things that mattered. In the end, the choices that were correct shaped his future and relationships, but the times he was wrong remain close in memory due to the consequences they entailed.

10 Right: Love Is A Legitimate Power

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

Harry was as right in this as Voldemort was wrong to consider love to be for the weak. Not only was love a personal driver, but it also turned out to be a legitimate magical power as Harry used it to protect the people at the Battle of Hogwarts.

Voldemort could do nothing at this moment to harm anyone, as Harry’s protection ran through everyone in the Great Hall. Even then, Voldemort thought Harry was wrong, but the latter proved otherwise by ensuring everyone present remained alive through the power of his love.

9 Wrong: That Snape Hated Him Because Of His Mother

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

Harry was right to think that Snape hated him; he was also correct in thinking that this was due to Snape’s hatred of his father. However, he was completely wrong when he assumed Snape also hated Lily, which he thought due to witnessing Snape calling her a Mudblood in his memory.

At the end of Half-Blood Prince, Harry told the others that Snape “didn’t think his mother was worth a damn,” fueling his anger further. As it turned out, Snape heroically gave his life because of Lily, the woman he not only didn’t hate but was completely in love with and had been ever since he first saw her in their youth.

8 Right: He Had To Accept The Connection With Voldemort

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

After Voldemort took advantage of the mental connection he and Harry shared, he came to regret it when the power of love prevented him from possessing the Boy Who Lived. However, everyone kept telling Harry to deny the visions he got in Voldemort’s mind in Deathly Hallows as they feared he might take advantage of Harry again.

Harry initially tried to resist but came to consider these visions a point in his favor and willingly looked into Voldemort’s mind. He turned out to be absolutely right, as by embracing this connection Harry was able to learn the location of the final Horcrux at Hogwarts, thus ensuring his victory.

7 Wrong: That Ron Would Follow Him Without Question

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

The fight between Harry and Ron in Deathly Hallows made for a heartbreaking separation, which was the result of Harry’s failure to see that Ron wasn’t completely on board. By the ending of Half-Blood Prince, he had been convinced that Ron was going to follow him without question.

This was far from the case, with Ron growing contemptuous of Harry for leading him and Hermione to a dead end. Harry thought that Ron would stick by him as Hermione was, not realizing that Ron needed more of a reason to stay than just his word.

6 Right: Reasoning That The Deluminator Was To Help Ron Return

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

Ron’s estrangement didn’t last long since he returned to Harry and Hermione after regretting his actions. He found them through the Deluminator, which Ron figured was deliberately done because Dumbledore figured out he would abandon them,

To this, Harry argued that Dumbledore actually did so because Ron would’ve wanted to come back. Harry interpreted the same situation in a positive light as a testament to Ron’s character, which he was right about since Dumbledore confirmed it when he met Harry at King’s Cross.

5 Wrong: Blaming Hermione For Losing The Firebolt

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

The introduction of the Firebolt was different in the film adaptation of Prisoner of Azkaban, where Harry received the broom at the end. In the book, Sirius sent it anonymously, which got Hermione worried enough for her to report it to Professor McGonagall who confiscated it.

Harry’s anger led to him blaming Hermione for the broom being taken away despite Hermione only acting in his best interests. What’s funny is that Harry actively knew he was wrong and Hermione was right, as he acknowledged to himself that Hermione’s fears were valid. However, his anger got the best of him and he continued to give Hermione the cold shoulder.

4 Right: Keeping The Deathly Hallows Away From One Another

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

Harry was proven as the Master of Death when he came under the possession of each of the Deathly Hallows but accepted the inevitable nature of death instead. He rejected the most powerful wand in existence, left the Resurrection Stone in the Forbidden Forest, and only kept the Invisibility Cloak.

His decision was the right one, as by giving the wand away, Harry finally put an end to the long and bloody history of death attached to it. The Resurrection Stone never brought people back in full, meaning Harry saved himself from feeling detached from his loved ones and losing his sanity.

3 Wrong: Thinking Kreacher’s Feelings Didn’t Matter

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

Harry was well aware of facts about Dobby’s life due to having genuine love and care for him. However, he didn’t have either of these to spare for Kreacher, whom he considered unworthy of kind treatment and basically thought to be useless.

As he found out in Deathly Hallows, Kreacher had betrayed Sirius primarily because the latter treated him like dirt. He had complete loyalty for Regulus due to him being kind and compassionate. After Harry did the same, he came to know that Kreacher had always been a good person at heart to whom the world had been cruel.

2 Right: That Facing Voldemort Was His Choice

Harry Potter 5 Things Harry Was Right About (& 5 Times He Was Wrong)

After finding out that Voldemort had made seven Horcruxes, Harry became worried that he might not be equipped to face his enemy. Dumbledore helped him realize that, with or without the Horcruxes, Voldemort would try to kill Harry due to the prophecy.

It was here that Harry felt that meeting Voldemort was his choice, as he could very well try to run away from Voldemort or he could face him head-on with bravery. In the end, he did just that by pursuing and destroying the Horcrux before looking Voldemort in the eye as he defeated his mortal enemy.

1 Wrong: Voldemort’s Capture Of Sirius

Occlumency was something Dumbledore didn’t step in to help Harry with, instead leaving it to Snape, who made a mess of the whole thing. Voldemort capitalized on the connection he shared with Harry by planting a fake vision of Sirius’ capture, which convinced Harry to head to the Department of Mysteries to rescue him.

Sadly for Harry, Sirius ended up dying anyway as he arrived to save Harry instead. He turned out to be gravely wrong about the whole situation, something he lamented over later on when he realized that Sirius would have lived had he accepted Hermione’s suggestion that his vision hadn’t been right.
