Another peculiar theory about Ron Weasley wonders if the young Weasley was, in fact, a Death Eater all along. These fans weave a theory that Ron had been expertly playing both sides right until the Second Wizarding War. It wasn’t difficult to imagine him as a master strategist, since he was after all, the best chess player that Hogwarts seen in a century.

This ‘what if’ idea revolves round the possibility that Ron had always positioned himself close to the source of power by becoming the Boy Who Lived’s best friend and making everyone believe that he was the duller of the two friends. He shows little moral dilemma and of course, his pet is Peter Pettigrew, the one person responsible for bringing Voldemort back to life. He was also a pureblood, so it would have been easy for him to be loyal to the Dark Lord.

In the final part, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, one of the most heartwarming as well as thrilling moments in the series took place when Ron saved Harry from drowning in the freezing lake and retrieved the Sword of Gryffindor at one go.

The theory suggests that had Ron not returned as he did, Snape would surely have saved Harry’s life instead. Fans will recall that it was Snape who had conjured the Patronus in the first place to lead Harry to the Sword. The surly professor would never have allowed Harry to drown and might have turned up in person to save the boy’s neck.

If Ron had never existed, there would obviously have been a drastic change in the dynamics between the other characters too. For instance, Hermione had only been in the girl’s toilet because she was upset with Ron in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, and the three fought the troll together, the event that made them firm friends, only because the boys went to save Hermione. So, Harry and Hermione would never really have been such good friends had it not been for Ron in the first place. Neither would Harry have had a family to call his own, for the Weasleys were, for all intents and purposes, his only family.
