Harry Potter The Best Book Cover Art Ranked

The Harry Potter books have left an indelible mark on our hearts. While the stories themselves are powerful and inspiring, representative of a marked time in our collective childhood, the art that went into each cover and the heading of each chapter is somehow just as important. And with a series as monumental as Harry Potter, there are countless different versions of the cover art; anniversary releases, special editions, and of course, the different editions that were released in different languages around the globe.

With a new Order of the Phoenix Hogwarts House edition set to be released in June, it is a good time as any to look back at all the amazing cover art that the Potter series has produced. From the UK to China, here are the ten best Harry Potter covers.

10 The Goblet of Fire – German Adult Edition

Harry Potter The Best Book Cover Art Ranked

The Goblet of Fire marks a strong turn in the series; it represents the point that the series grew suddenly much, much darker. The Prisoner of Azkaban brought us closer to this point, but it was the Goblet of Fire that turned a lighthearted children’s story into a dark adventure. This German edition of the cover represents that quite well — it is full of dark storm clouds and shadows, interspersed among streaks of flame from the dragon; a challenge for Harry, but not the true enemy.

9 The Half-Blood Prince – Original American Edition

The Half-Blood Prince marks Harry’s last full year at Hogwarts. It is a time of open warfare, mounting terror, recovery from never-ending loss. This cover aptly captures the content of this story. The focus is, of course, on the Pensieve and the trips into memory that Dumbledore took so often with Harry, as a means of understanding their enemy. The Dark Mark, which dominates the back cover, as well as the green hue make Voldemort and Harry’s potential impending doom even more real. The killing curse is green, as is this cover.

8 The Order Of The Phoenix – UK Children’s Edition

This cover is, simply put, a beautiful artistic rendition. The focal point of the artwork is also incredibly apt to the story; a flaming golden phoenix, rising from the ashes and spreading its wings.

This small moment, captured in art, provides a strong gateway into this story. It is perfectly representative of The Order itself, as this book represents the resurrection of The Order that fought Voldemort last time.

7 The Prisoner Of Azkaban – Swedish Edition

This cover, while being semi-abstract, is one of the best versions of The Prisoner of Azkaban out there. It somehow captures the entirety of the arc of the story, all in one continuous image. With Dementors in the background, Buckbeack front and center, and that look of grim determination upon his face, this cover is certainly worthy of recognition.

6 The Sorceror’s Stone – Chinese Edition

Every Chinese edition of the Harry Potter novels is spectacular, if only for the fact that they are so different than the other editions. For starters, each cover is drawn on a tattered scroll, which is painted onto the cover. This cover specifically includes a truly incredible rendition of Fluffy the three-headed dog, which certainly makes it stand out.

5 The Deathly Hallows – Ukraine Edition

This cover perfectly represents the many complexities of the seventh and final book. Hogwarts is in the background, with flames all around it, and Nagini and many of the other Horcruxes are floating throughout the cover. The sword of Gryffindor is also featured relatively prominently; all things that contribute to making this one of the better covers.

4 The Chamber Of Secrets – New Russian Edition

The special thing about the New Russian covers is their prominently Gothic theme. Beyond that, each cover features one object that is vital to each story.

The Chamber of Secrets New Russian edition features an interesting version of the sword of Godric Gryffindor; that, plus its dark background bumps this cover up to 4th place.

3 The Order Of The Phoenix – Swedish Edition

All the Swedish editions of the Harry Potter series are worthy of recognition; this marks the second Swedish cover that made its way onto our list. This version of The Order of the Phoenix showcases Harry on his way to the Ministry of Magic to rescue Sirius. This moment itself is important in that it is symbolic; you can only see a Thestral if you have seen death. Putting it on the cover acts as a means of foreshadowing Sirius’s death.

2 The Half-Blood Prince – Dutch Edition

The Half-Blood Prince is arguably one of the better books in the series. It is full of encroaching darkness that is merged expertly with the kind of teenage drama that Harry is now experiencing. One of the best parts of the book occurs at the end, when Draco Malfoy leads a troop of Death Eaters into the school, where they meet members of the Order of the Phoenix, as well as members of Dumbledore’s Army. This entire aspect of the book, unfortunately, never made it into the movies, which makes the fact that it is represented on this cover all the more special.

1 The Deathly Hallows – UK Children’s Edition

It seems appropriate that the best cover of each edition of the series around the world is the UK version, the place that JK Rowling calls home. The scene this artist chose to capture is the one where Harry, Ron, and Hermione break into the Lestrange’s Gringotts vault. In this mix of chaos and humor, this image perfectly captures each character’s personality.

Ron is wide-eyed and terrified, all while he retains his grip on the Sword of Gryffindor; Hermione is reaching for something, and Harry is absolutely and entirely focused on retrieving the Horcrux. It is a perfect representation of not just The Deathly Hallows, but also the entire series: a mix of chaos and humor, perpetuated by the three friends.
