Invasion What Is The Alien Claw The Malik Family’s Weapon Explained

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Apple TV+’s Invasion.

Apple TV+’s Invasion sees the Malik family in possession of a powerful, otherworldly weapon – but what exactly is the alien claw? Created by former X-Men director Simon Kinberg, Invasion has drawn criticism from some quarters who cite its slow-burn narrative as a far cry from the alien bonanza Apple initially advertised the series as. As Invasion season 1 enters its final throes, however, the disparate, global characters fighting for survival begin to converge in an attempt to save the world from the extraterrestrials attacking the planet, setting up a climactic season finale in the process.

Invasion episode 9, “Full of Stars,” sees the Malik family hunted in the woods by a guerilla force, who are looking to take control of the alien technology Luke (Azhy Robertson) has been wielding unknowingly for much for the series. As Ahmed (Firas Nassar) sacrifices his life to allow his wife and children to escape, Invasion shows Aneesha (Golshifteh Farahani), Luke, and Sarah Malik (Tara Moayedi) reaching a dead end as the path in front of them becomes filled with a corrosive, alien substance. In a desperate attempt to save her family, Aneesha decides to use the alien artifact (referred to by the military as “the claw”), with the claw subsequently parting the corrosive substance and allowing her family safe passage beyond the reach of the pursuing militia.

While the ultimate purpose of the Malik’s alien claw is yet to be revealed, “Full of Stars” confirms that the otherworldly weapon emits and changes the frequency Invasion’s aliens vibrate at. This essentially makes the alien claw a bizarre type of remote control for the species, with Aneesha’s using it to part the alien slime just the latest example of the claw’s potency. The claw can also show the Invasion alien’s presence both near and far, and is further shown to have corruptive powers, as evidenced by Luke’s continued attachment to the item.

Invasion episode 9 finally confirms how the aliens communicate via vibrations as Caspar (Billy Barratt) single-handedly taps into the alien frequency and kills the aliens attacking the London hospital. This revelation also confirms the vibrations that run through the alien claw are, in fact, an alien language, backed up by several previously unexplainable events across Invasion season 1. Luke uses the claw to speak to a dying alien without getting attacked in “Contact,” before being pulled into a trance-like state in the hospital, both indicators that he communicating with the alien race in their own language just as Caspar explains he does in Invasion via his seizures.

Yet the alien claw’s power goes deeper than just a translation tool, with the weapon actively able to reverse the alien frequencies. Aneesha parting the substance in the woods is the prime example here, with the corrosive alien nodes reversing like sound waves as she leads her family to safety. Luke is also shown to use the claw as an alien location tool throughout Invasion, with several scenes showing the grooves on the claw moving in the direction of their unseen enemy akin to the pattern of a sound wave. The alien claw’s frequency-changing abilities are also shown to have a strong effect on Luke in Apple TV+’s Invasion, with the young boy unable to give up the alien weapon before it is forcefully taken and handed to the military at the beginning of “Full of Stars.”

All of these facts conspire to indicate the alien claw the Maliks hold will continue to play a huge role in the survival of humankind. Invasion has already established the alien’s reliance on synthetic communications, meaning the Malik’s alien claw may well be a key factor in disrupting their takeover of Earth. Although its true destiny is yet to be revealed in Invasion, the Malik’s alien claw is a pivotal weapon that is sure to see more screentime in the Apple TV+ original.
