Screen Rant’s Pitch Meeting series is getting magical with the latest episode centered on the beloved Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The 2001 fantasy film was based on J.K. Rowling’s 1997 novel of the same name in which the titular young wizard learns of his fame in the Wizarding World and heads off to begin his education at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Daniel Radcliffe led the cast of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone alongside Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and Tom Felton.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was a smash hit upon release, scoring rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and grossing over $974 million at the worldwide box office in its initial run, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. The film’s success would launch a franchise based on the remainder of Rowling’s book series, which initially concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 a decade after the original film’s release. The franchise has since come back to life with the Fantastic Beasts prequel set of films, though some are now looking back at the legacy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone as it celebrates a major milestone.

In honor of the film’s 20th anniversary, Screen Rant’s own Pitch Meeting series is looking back at Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The video hilariously highlights the film’s frequent plot inconsistencies, contradictory world building and poor novel translations. Check out the funny episode below:

As celebrated as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is by fans of the franchise and critics, it’s hard to deny some of the film’s underlying problems when taking off the rose-tinted glasses. Given Harry’s importance as the hero of the franchise, there was always bound to be some conveniences in his journey to defeat evil, though as noted in the new Pitch Meeting, the film was littered with moments of plot armor for the young wizard. The biggest, of course, was his blood being used to defeat Professor Quirrell and Voldemort, an element that would later become a key plot point in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

One of the funnier notes in the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone episode is that Hogwarts and its students celebrates Christmas, a holiday based in paganism that has since become a religious day to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Upon its release in 1997, Rowling’s novel and the rest of the series was attacked by many religious groups and banned in some countries under the pretense the books were promoting witchcraft to a young demographic. Audiences looking to celebrate Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’s 20th anniversary can stream the film and its sequels on HBO Max and Peacock now.
